Pre CHL training in Houston?

Post by Carrots »

As some of you will know I've recently been denied by NICS due to a residency duration misunderstanding. I'm pretty confident that I'll be Ok'd once my new 90 day waiting period is up but as a safety net I'm planning to get my CHL early. I had originally planned to wait until next year, once I'd had some practice and felt a little happier with all things lively but with $750 in a pistol that is currently in someone elses house I have found a new sense of urgency. I've ordered the forms and so all being well I will have those in hand by the end of this month, and then all being well I would like to take the class and file in November. Now from hunting around most places say that you need to have basic firearms skills before showing up to them (which seems sensible) so I am looking for some pre-CHL instruction. Probably a few hours would do it. The good news is that I have all the time in the world at the moment, and so can be flexible on times/places, but the bad news is that the only experience I have of guns is the 5 minute period I spent holding mine last week before being told to come back in 90 days. I don't necessarily need any formal guidance, and I'm hoping that there will be a nice man or woman in my local area who would be willing to take me down to the range with them and show me the basics. Of course I'd be happy to compensate you for your time as appropriate (or buy your ammo/ dinner &c). Alternatively I have no issue with something a little more formal, if this is your living, you have a window and you have a friendly disposition. The only real need is for you to have a licence and have a little patience. if you were in the same boat and know of somewhere local that I can go to for this then that info would be appreciated to. Basically the format isn't too important to me I just don't want to attempt the class totally unprepared. My pistol is currently under lock and key and so the range would need to do loaners, ideally in at least the caliber that I have waiting (45acp). I'm hoping that this request isn't too cheeky, but from my original posting you all seem to be pretty friendly bunch and as Im new to Houston (and the US) my social circle isn't as wide as it could be. Again I just need enough hands on experience to sign up for the class, nothing more nothing less, I have been (and will continue) to do the reading but I need an avenue to get some on the ground practice. The plan was to do that with my new pistol, but now that I can't have that I need to do something else. I'm looking to do this over the next couple of weeks so that I can take the class pretty quickly after I recieve my pack from Austin. With a 60 day plus turn around I want to get filed ASAP. If it matters I am a lovely 26 y/r old Englishman, squeaky clean, polite and not a hazard to man nor beast. I'm in NW Houston around TC Jester exit of 610. Please PM me if you can help. Thanks folks
