.22LR or Magnum uppers for Bushie

Post by asleepatthereel »

I was thinking about getting a conversion kit for my Bushmaster, and was wondering if anyone makes a complete upper including barrel for .22 in either long rifle or magnum. Im at work right now, and ITS has blocked most firearm related sites, so Google isnt much help till I go home. The kits I have seen use a bolt and magazine that adapts the upper reciever and converts it to .22. My concern is that the twist in the barrel will be too fast and will foul up the rifling. Not really a problem when you consider the amount of $$ saved by going rimfire, It will just be a pain to clean all that lead out every time I go let off some steam at the range. I was also told that after shooting a hundred or so rounds through it, it is OK to 'chase' the lead out by firing a couple of .223 rounds through the fouled barrel. I have my doubts about that though. Doesnt really sound like a smart thing to do.

Ive seen alot of 6.5 and .308 uppers, but I cant recall ever seeing a .22 caliber upper. I suppose I could get a barrel with a slower or progressive twist for shooting rimfire, but that would involve alot more work than just replacing the entire upper and using the conversion magazine.

I looked into this a while back and the problem is most dedicated 22LR uppers cost 3-4 times as much as a complete 22 rifle. Even the Ciener conversion kit by itself costs as much as a Ruger 10/22 and extra Ciener magazines cost a lot more than 10/22 magazines. A 22 upper would make sense if I had a registered full auto lower, but otherwise it doesn't add up for me.

I wonder if you could have a .22LR barrel liner installed in a shot-out .223 barrel?

Would that be expensive?

Yep, checked them out today at home. I guess Ill just get the conversion kit, and spend more quality time with the Bushies bore afterward.

What about firing a couple rounds of .223 through the fouled barrel to get the lead out? That doesnt sound right to me. Seems like the added resistance for bullet to travel through would make alot of pressure near the chamber, not to mention the chance of sending lead particles into the gas tube. Is my hunch wrong about that? Ive heard it from several folks, but dont recall ever seeing anything anything on the Forum about it, and in my experience we have more knowledgeable folks here.

I think a 16-18" upper in .17, either HMR or HM2, would really be fun.
