Embassy Suites in Austin posted 30.06

Post by NcongruNt »

I went to a company holiday party the other night at Embassy Suites, near I-35 and 290E in Austin. I checked for signs as I went in, and saw none. I enjoyed the party, and as I was leaving, I saw something (not readable at the angle I saw it from). I walked over, and sure enough, there was a 30.06 sign (valid size, language, and contrast), posted as if it had been hidden from general view for aesthetic reasons.

The driveway for check-in is located at the west face of the building with a drive-under awning with support pillars at both north and south ends (at the western corners, farthest from the building). The sign is located on the interior side (facing south) of the north pillar, a location only really visible if you were driving up to check in - the general parking lot is west and north of the entrance. While the sign is of legally enforceable size, it does not meet the "is displayed in a conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public." criteria of TPC 30.06. This is the first 30.06 sign I've seen in Austin in quite a while. While the enforceability of such a sign is questionable, it may not be clear-cut enough to explain definitively to an LEO. I will not be doing business with Embassy Suites as long as they have the sign up.

I got a few photos, though not of great quality. There was a security guard loitering in the area, and I didn't really want to draw attention to myself - so I didn't get a close-up of the sign itself. Note that these were taken with a wide-angle lens, with greater view for detail in the periphery than the eyesight of a human.

A view of the front of the building (facing east), for perspective:

A view of the front drive area facing north, where you would drive in to check in for bellhop service. Sign is partially visible

A view from underneath the awning, facing north, sign is visible at the left.

I will check with my buddy at Embassy Suites to see if that sign is in violation of Hilton/Embassy Suite standards.

Its a large sign, but many times managers take it upon themselves to place signage they shouldnt.

I will post back when i find out.

Wow, we stayed there a few months ago. I never saw the sign there. Won't be staying there again I suppose.

Seems to me like they're just posting the drop-off area. so, you just can't carry in the drop-off area, being as it is open, and the doors to the hotel make it seperate and all...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

I've been to that Embassy Suite's a lot for meetings and to pick up coleague visiting Austin. I have definitely carried there. That sign doesn't look like it's in a very conspicuous place. I'm sure i'd not have seen it had it not been pointed out here. And if it's where I think it is, it won't be seen if you are coming into the hotel from the normal place you park.

Sometimes a complaint to the management helps.

A couple of years ago, I was on a business trip to Minneapolis/St.Paul, and stayed at a "Country Inn by Carlson." They had the Minnesota version of a "No Guns" sign posted at their restaurant. I informed the regional manager (who happened to be there on an inspection trip of some sort) that when I met with some local colleagues after work for a meal, we honored their policy and took our business elsewhere . . . and that on future trips, I would further honor their policy by staying elsewhere.

The sign was removed by that afternoon. ;-)

honestly, the Embassy Suites I've stayed at will probably care less whether or not they lose CHL holder customers. that place is always insanely packed. i guess it's the awesome breakfasts and happy hours they have.
