Mindset

Post by pfgrone »

Last night I watched a special edition dvd of Tora, Tora, Tora. (Wife is away) What was interesting was the short documentary that came with the movie. It featured some historians giving their opinions about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Without much effort at all, it was easy to make correlations to our issues. Several times the historians blamed "mindset" for not being fully prepared for the attack. Got me to thinking about concealed carry mindset. "Can't happen to me" wasn't my mindset. But "Probably won't happen to me" was. Finally an incident that didn't materialize, but could have, scared me and got me thinking and now I'm waiting for DPS to send me (and the Princess) our CHLs. Mindset - it's something to think about. Here's an example:

Would like to hear from you old-timers about this. Paul G.

Guess I'll be the 1st old timer. There really are a few older than I am. It can happen to you. An earlier post today referred to my folder I keep entitled Why I Carry 24-7. In that folder I keep articles on specific crimes from the local paper. I challenge folks to keep their own for a while if they think like you said, "it can't happen to me", or "it won't happen to me". Only keep articles that are about violent crime that happens in places good people go at times good people go there. Make special note of places that are, "hey I go there". Or "Hey I was there yesterday." I have done this since 2004 & my criteria is it has to be a place I do go. Right now the average is every 15 weeks that a crime of MAJOR violence takes place at a place I frequent & at a time I would possibly be there. These are not the stabbings in the rough bars, nor the robberies at midnight in the isolated Quick Stop. They happen in day hours at reputable businesses or places that good people go. If violent crime is taking place in a place I do visit, at a time I would be there, every 15 weeks then sooner or later the blessing of absence is liable to run out. Read my signature.

He's retired from them now, but gotta give Dan Walker of DPS credit for this one. Something to the effect of:

"CHL people who don't carry their handgun are kinda like the LEOs who only choose to wear their body armor on the days they think they might get shot."

longtooth, your your sig line says similar - in fewer words.
