Florida Shooting Range Shooting

If one of the mods can replace this link with one without the advertisement, that would be good.

I'm not a mod, but here's one that didn't have any ads or anything like that:

A sad situation, that's for sure. :(

This is bad news.

Summary: A 44-year-old woman went to a shooting range with her adult son, shot him and then herself. Both dead. She left notes and audio recordings that indicate that she was severely mentally ill. She thought she was the Antichrist.

I'm not trying to make light of this incident, but the article implied that the family knew she was unstable. Why would you go to a gun range with someone you knew to be unstable?

Like many things in life, people become accustomed to having a mentally ill family member. Successful suicides are often preceded by threats of suicide that are not carried out, and half-hearted attempts. Sometimes these things go on for years, and people consider them an annoying eccentricity rather than a real risk.

Going to a shooting range with such a person is probably no more risky than everyday life. Mentally ill people have done things like nail the doors of their own house shut and set it on fire. Quite a few have crashed vehicles or driven into water.

I remember several years ago, a man who was known to be mentally ill drove to Galveston with his family for the specific purpose of driving into the ocean. He survived the event, and stated afterward that he had to do it to get the devil out of his children -- quite a bit like this case.

If you search the web for "family murder suicide," you can see that a lot of similar incidents have occurred this year. They are often attributed to economic conditions. That may be a precipitating factor; but as I've said many times, millions of people lose their jobs or go bankrupt and deal with it without resorting to violence.
