Range qualification

Could someone please tell me why some CHL instructors are requiring 9mm or larger for the CHL range qualification. The Texas DPS website states .32 caliber or larger. I purchased a .380 auto for concealed carry and now I can't qualify with it because the instructor I chose tells me after I have registered for the class that the state requires 9mm or larger.

An instructor cannot establish requirements for certification that conflict with State law. I think the instructor should either let you use the 380 or refund your money. You can also let him/her know that you are going to call DPS to check on his minimum caliber requirement. I suspect that will get you some relief.

The requirements are in black and white in the 2007 Texas Concealed handgun laws booklet. See the highlighted section below. I would report the instructor if all else fails.

ciency and shall develop a course to teach handgun proficiency and
examinations to measure handgun proficiency. The course to teach
handgun proficiency must contain training sessions divided into two
parts. One part of the course must be classroom instruction and the
other part must be range instruction and an actual demonstration by
the applicant of the applicant's ability to safely and proficiently use the
category of handgun for which the applicant seeks certification. An
applicant may not be certified unless the applicant demonstrates, at a
minimum, the degree of proficiency that is required to effectively
operate a handgun of.32 caliber or above. The department shall
distribute the standards, course requirements, and examinations on
request to any qualied handgun instructor.

Also consider that .380ACP is known by several other names - 9mm Browning, 9mm Kurtz, 9mm Short, and 9x17mm

All of which, are, by definition 9mm.

I would be tempted to fire that instructor, insist on my money back, report him to DPS, and question his intelligence on several levels.
