League City: Mayor assaulted

Post by seamusTX »

Mayor Toni Randall of League City was assaulted by a male driver in what police described as a "road rage" incident.

Mayor Randall is well known for riding a motor scooter around the city.

Ms. Randall's family owns the A&R Gun Range in League City. Her decision to run for mayor was motivated in part by the previous administration's efforts to shut down the range. She was elected in 2008.

It's unknown whether the perpetrator in this incident knew Ms. Randall was the mayor, but League City politics are unusually nasty.

:thumbs2: Just when you think League City can't come up with something new...someone pulls this. Amazing. I love that town.

Huh. The story on the newspapers web site has been updated since I first read it in the printed paper. The original story did not say that they had caught the jerk.

I'm thinking assault at a minimum. Aggravated if the mayor was injured.

BTW, she's a petite woman.

A 17-year-old male was arrested yesterday on misdemeanor charges of assault and deadly conduct.

According to his mother, it's all the mayor's fault. :skep:

KHOU reported that everything may not be as it seems:

I'm quite curious how this will play out in court. Maybe Discount Tire had surveillance video of the confrontation, since it occurred in front of their store.
Carrying since 02/06/2009.

I'll admit to being prejudiced. In over 40 years of riding bicycles, I have never known a cyclist to attack the driver of a full-size vehicle. I've been on the receiving end from thoughtless and aggressive drivers plenty of times.

I also am always skeptical of boys or men (which is it at 17?) who hit women. Enough said.

:iagree: The Houston Chronicle has more as well. I also question the liklihood of another driver coming to the rescue of the mayor because she was acting crazy and assaulting a young fellow who was just trying to get away, as is claimed by the girlfriend. If I'm not mistaken, much of the direct confrontation at Discount Tire was witnessed by others at the scene (that's how they ID'd the driver). The story he & his girlfriend tell smells fishy to me...

This is from the KHOU article.

"Activist Quanell X plans to meet with the police chief on Wednesday to find out more about what happened."

Should clear things right up.

Q10 always puts me in mind of J.R.R. Tolkein's comment from Bilbo: "Confusticate and bebother these dwarves!"

"Confusticate & bebother" seems to be Q10's primary purpose

Benson’s mother, Candace Ford, said her son was trying to get away from Randall, who had been braking sharply in front of him, when he pulled into the Discount Tire parking lot in Clear Lake Shores.
"Braking sharply" on a lightweight vehicle with a top speed of 45mph shouldn't be an issue for anyone obeying TC545.062.

Sec. 545.062. FOLLOWING DISTANCE. (a) An operator shall, if following another vehicle, maintain an assured clear distance between the two vehicles so that, considering the speed of the vehicles, traffic, and the conditions of the highway, the operator can safely stop without colliding with the preceding vehicle or veering into another vehicle, object, or person on or near the highway.

I have two comments based on the assumption, which I am not at all certain of, that these reports are accurate:
  • There is no excuse for tailgating, none, nada, zilch, zip. You will not get where you're going one second sooner because you are one or twenty feet behind the vehicle in front of you.
  • There may be a reason to engage in a road-rage incident, but I can't think of one. I have managed to disengage every time.
