12-year-old girl accidentally shot by older sister

Stories of accidental shootings are no longer a rare event in today's society. With countless individuals owning guns, either licensed or not, the reality is that unless safety precautions are taken seriously, these guns have the potential to end up in the wrong hands.

Yesterday morning, just before 9 a.m. on Father's Day, three girls were allegedly playing with their mother's gun when the weapon discharged, striking a 12-year-old girl, Juanita Martin. Her older sister, 16, was said to have accidentally pulled the trigger, striking the adolescent girl in the side.

In the Galveston County paper, The Daily News, it was reported that: The girl was unresponsive when police arrived, and was pronounced dead after being taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital, Galveston police spokesman D.J. Alvarez said.

The mother was not at home at the the time the shooting occurred.

A full investigation has been launched into the shooting and the sister who was believed to be responsible for the shooting has not been charged at this time.

Neighbors and friends of the middle school student explained what a sweet and loving child Juanita was. They also told the news that her and her two sisters were "very close." They left flowers and stuffed animals on the family's porch in remembrance of their vibrant young neighbor. The house was still empty as the family were reportedly in Houston.

The details on the story were limited, including information on the family, the gun and the reason the girls were at home alone. The older sister's name has not been released.
