Packing for school: Guns on campus one year later

Excerpts:
WICHITA FALLS — One year ago, David Thweatt made a decision so controversial and groundbreaking the story about it sped around the world.

The superintendent of the isolated Harrold Independent School District, about 30 miles northwest of here, made history last August when he and his school board decided to allow select teachers and staff members at the 110-student school to carry guns on campus — a first for Texas and the nation.

...

In the year since that historic decision, a gun was never brandished or fired at the school. There were no problems, Thweatt said.

...

A deputy had peered inside and “saw something in the walls and windows and called for backup,” Thweatt said. “They made it to the abandoned house in 15 minutes. We had figured it would take 18 to 20 minutes in a typical situation.”

Had that been an armed intruder at his school, response time would have been too slow.

...

Harrold students, who grew up on ranches and in the middle of the North Texas gun culture, were unperturbed by the school district’s new gun policy.

“The kids just laughed about it,” Thweatt said.

...

According to Barbara Williams with the Texas Association of School Boards, Harrold remains the only Texas school district with a guns-on-campus policy.

...

... She was even called by the Dr. Phil show, who asked her to help plan a show on the topic because they were so fascinated by it. She refused.

To her, it was so obvious as to be a non-issue. Dr. Phil, who claims to be a Texan, should know that, she said.

Awesome article and post ELB! Thanks. I didn't even know about it. :thumbs2:

I read all the comments, and they sounded like they came from this forum. One comment in particular really impressed me:

"I’m happy to see that most of Texas is sane enough to keep their schools safe the same way as Golda Mayor (in Israel) did back in the 1960’s by arming the teachers. That put a halt to terrorists killing innocent children in Israeli schools. Most Americans outside of Texas haven’t wised up to that fact, and still listen to the Brady Bunch’s hysterics about the “dangers” about all of those “evil” guns. Most Government bureaucrats do no better than to “never waste a crisis,” and dance in the blood of the victims everytime some nut-job is hell-bent on murder and mayhem.

I would rather live W/ a little guilt of whacking a hardened criminal than having to live with the guilt of having done nothing to protect innocent victims against the predators that society coddles and soft judges continue to allow to live in the same free society as law-abiding citizens now enjoy. Don’t let anyone tell you that self defense, defense of the innocent or those unable to defend themselves is in itself is a crime. Those who rail against the death-penalty must realize that it is not about revenge –– it is about punishment!"

David Thweatt graduated from Hardin-Simmons in Abilene(a small Baptist school). I took my military science & tactics courses at H.S.

I think all of the comments came from the Abilene area.

Yes, the website is for an Abilene newpaper -- doubt it gets much circulation beyond that area normally. I picked up the link at WarriorTalk -- hope this gets spread around. Altho the NYT has done a couple surprisingly evenhanded articles on citizen-defense lately, I doubt they will do that for a story like this.

Interesting. I went to highschool at a small 3a school outside of austin about 20 years ago. Yes it was rural.

We did not have any formal rule for guns on campus. Many students, teachers and coaches all hunted though.

I remember an exchange student freaked out when he saw a shotgun in the back window of someones pickup.

Anyways, our point for 'guns at school' was that we would go dove/quail hunting over lunch or after school. Man that was a lot of fun. It was really a good memory to go hunting with my teachers.

Nobody was ever shot. Everyone had licenses. Heck we even had a few people from the sheriffs dept hunt as well.

But I guess to the anti-gun people we would have been better off smoking crack in the woods after school or wrecking cars.

According to Wiki, he is.

McGraw graduated in 1975 from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in experimental psychology in 1976, and a Ph.D in clinical psychology in 1979 at the University of North Texas,[6]

But, I still don't like him or his politics.
