I feel sorry for the guy for hurting himself but could one be any stupider?
No charges are going to be filed in the case, and Sgt. Hodges says the man's name is not going to be released.
I hope not! If it gets out, how could he live it down!

Unless it was cheap steel-cased stuff, he would pretty much have to be: brass doesn't spark.

I am no expert on powder but I don't think it would have to spark. The tip of a drill bit can get pretty darned hot and at the point it penetrates the brass, air combined with the extreme heat of the bit, might just be enough to do it. I have watched drill bits get so hot they start smoking.
That was what he did wrong!!!! You should lay the shell in a pan of water while you drill it. How about one of you fellers give it a try. Oh yeah...and video tape it for us.

Im half afraid to post this in fear.
Ive drilled a live shell before. It was a 50 cal.
Co-worker had it and wanted the powder out of it. I told him I could drill a hole in the side near the base if he wanted me to.
He told me it was OK with him.
I set it in the vice, used a lit bit of oil, set the drill on a low speed, kept the tip cool and drilled right through the brass. Poured the powder into a metal can and burned it off.

Sometime it's not what you do but how you do it!

Except that brass is soft, and cartridge casings are relatively thin. The bit would have to be rally dull to heat up that much before it punched through.
