Range report

Post by Kevinf2349 »

Well today was a fun day.

My good lady and I ventured down to the range with 3 firearms and the Advantage Arms conversion kit for the Glock in tow.

The AA kit was installed onto the Glock 19 is a matter for seconds. The Glock was so much lighter and I was a little worried about some of the .22LR I had with me as it wasn't recommended by AA.

I cycled 60 rounds through with a couple of failure to feeds and one failure to eject but for the most part the Glock with the kit was great fun to shoot. Hardly any recoil. I did shoot 10 rounds of Federal 36gr which is supposed to be 'not supported' but it went through just fine, cycling the slide just just fine. The 50 American Eagles 40gr were the ones that 'failed' but this was the first time to use the conversion so I wasn't too disappointed and .22 rimfire is cheap enough to not worry about it.

My wife blasted 100 rounds through her XD9 and is worrying accurate with that bad boy. (Winchester White Box) with no problems. That brings the total through that pitol to 170 and so far only one failure to feed but I suspect that is a loose wrist. We shot a hallow point through it just for grins and to make sure it fed ok. It did just fine.

The Bersa 380 had 31 but through it (can't waste that 380 on ranges too much!) I shot a Hornady HP through it just to see if it gave any issues feeding as this is a carry sidearm. It ran through just fine and the gun is loosening up nicely now. We had many FTF in the first 50 or so rounds but they are now getting fewer and fewer. Confidence in this gun is definately improving.

Swithced the Glock back to 9mm and drove a Winchester Hallow point through it. Again, this was the first time a hallow point was put through the firearm and it went through like a charm, no issues. (The Glock has only ever had one 'malfunction' and that was just a stovepipe)

All in all a useful and enjoyable day was had by both of us. We learned that shooting .22 is a lot of fun but you can't beat the XD or Glock for shear accuracy and reliability. Having popped hallow points through the triplets we now have total confidence that any of them are good carry candidates.

Then we hit the gun shop circuit! We got some new tru-glo sights for the XD9 as this is my wife's favorite pistol and 'she who must be obeyed' wanted new sights. We also got her a holster for the carry 'pocket book' and we invested in a fanny pack for her to carry her gun in when she walks the mutt or doesn't want to carry her main 'carry purse'.

All in all a good day with the wife and the guns.

Sounds like a great day at the range.

Q1. How long does it take to change out the Glock hardware?

Q2. If I read correctly, you tried <ONE?> hollow point in each gun?
I know that JHP's are kind of pricey, but I blew through 50 rounds of
my Speer Gold Dots to make sure they will cycle properly.

By the way, of the 50 shots, only #48 failed to fire on the 1st try.
I re-chambered it and it did fire on try 2.

I totally understand how your bride loves her XD9.
With my gun I can hit center mass OK, but when I shot an XD/Subcompact
.40 the XD was much more accurate with the same "nut behind the wheel"
so to speak.

Both my head and my heart are fighting it out over whether my "move up"
gun should be an XD or some brand of 1911.

Hi SIA

It took less than 2 minutes to change the Glock to a .22 and about the same time to change it back. Putting it on is simply a matter of field stripping the factory slide off and sliding on the conversion kit. Slap in a new mag and off you go.

Putting the gun back is a little different in that you uncock the gun (dry fire) and then you have to press the end of the barrel against a hard surface and then pulling the slide lstripping dubberys down and remove the slide in the usual manner. Then simply slide on the factory slide and slap in a mag and the gun is ready for 9mm.

Yes! I am a cheapskate and only shot one HP through each! "rlol" The main reason is that hallow points are hard to come by for the 380 (actually so is FMJ). The 9mm is a little easier to find, but I only have 50 (make that 48 now) and I like to carry full mags if possible. I need to buy more boxes of HP but I haven't really seen that much around. I am really trying to get hold of some Remmington Golden Saber. In truth we were also unsure if shooting hallow points was permitted at the range, but we saw no signs preventing it so we popped a trio.
