Another convert! Thanks for posting casingpoint! That was very interesting! More stories like that need to be done and made public.

Re: Jumping Through D.C. Hoops
The only thing he mentioned that kind of irked me was at the very end, where he was handling the gun and "pulled the trigger, because I knew it was unloaded". At the range or when disassemblying your Glock, maybe. But not in the bedroom where you stated you were worried about shooting through the wall into a neighbors house.

One of the crazy things that DC officials use to hassle gun owners is that
they use a California list of approved firearms (Mass. also has this) to approve
your selected firearm. If it's not on the Cali list, it's not legal in DC either.
If a black XD is on the Cali list, but you try to get you BiTone XD into DC, you
will be denied. Even though the guns are identical except for slide finish - sheesh!

$250 for the mandatory firearms course and $275 for the used revolver: semi-reasonable. $125 FFL transfer fee by the only guy who is allowed to do it in DC: BIG RIPOFF!

Why are we surprised?Keith B wrote:$250 for the mandatory firearms course and $275 for the used revolver: semi-reasonable. $125 FFL transfer fee by the only guy who is allowed to do it in DC: BIG RIPOFF!
I mean, this is DC, after all. No wonder our lawmakers up there have this monopoly-money attitude about things.
BTW $250 for the firearms course is semi-reasonable if it includes a license to carry, and only semi-reasonable in that light if you compare it to states such as TX. It's about $250 in fees plus classes to get a CHL in TX, and the requirements to just BUY A GUN in DC are very similar to the require a CHL in Texas.
Given the extreme small amount of business that the sole FFL in DC has, I don't think the $125 is all that unreasonable. How many guns does a regular TX gun store sell in a year? This guy in DC has moved 550 units due to the insane amount of red tape and hoops to jump through. So he's made about $6K in a year operating his FFL business. I'd have to make about 20x that much in order to make it a lucrative idea to move to DC and set up shop.
Anyway, the whole thing is a complete ripoff, sham, and a mess. It's about like DC thinks they are a different country.

Add range fees in there as well ($10)4copas wrote:I paid $140 plus $90 class for my Texas CHL.BTW $250 for the firearms course is semi-reasonable if it includes a license to carry, and only semi-reasonable in that light if you compare it to states such as TX. Re: Jumping Through D.C. Hoops
yeah so for $240 you get a TX CHL, OR you get to simply BUY a gun in DC..killerfly128 wrote:Add range fees in there as well ($10)4copas wrote:I paid $140 plus $90 class for my Texas CHL.BTW $250 for the firearms course is semi-reasonable if it includes a license to carry, and only semi-reasonable in that light if you compare it to states such as TX. I hate it when my guns just leap out of storage and start firing of their own accord. The Article wrote:My wife is adamant that that thing can't stay, and makes a compelling case that it's more likely to cause harm than to save us from it.

He didn't mention mailing anything, so maybe that guy has to drive to all the surrounding gun shops to pick up the DC resident's purchases? So in effect, that includes "shipping".Keith B wrote:$250 for the mandatory firearms course and $275 for the used revolver: semi-reasonable. $125 FFL transfer fee by the only guy who is allowed to do it in DC: BIG RIPOFF!
Of course that's still totally ridiculous, he should have just been allowed to bring it back over the border with him.
At least he did an excellent job writing up the four primary rules.
