My fear/observations

As a relative newcomer to the world of CHL there are a few things that really concern me.

The main one being that it seems to me that it is easier for big corporation to post a 30.06 just because some anti-gun, limited thinking, closed minded, liberal boardroom toadie wants to earn brownie points than to have the fortitude to actually debate the pros and cons of posting of such a sign.

Many smaller corporation and business look to large corporations as role models and so my fear is that they post the 30.06 without actually knowing (or caring) why and what it actually means.

On a total side issue...does anyone know why Academy will only turn over a firearm to the purchaser when they get outside of the building?

Companies that adopt 30.06 postings do so because lawyers are telling them that it reduces their liability.

There is no proof that this is true in the real world, but it has been going on for years.

Many store chains walk firearms purchasers out the door. Gander Mountain does also, in my personal experience. The reason is that some years ago, the deranged husband of a Wal-Mart employee bought ammunition there, and then shot her in the store. However, her lawsuit against Wal-Mart failed.

Thanks for the explanations. The 'walk to the door' one still baffles me. I just don't understand what it actually stops (unless it is again a liability issue)! but..."Oh well" if it makes them feel better then so be it

The guy at Gander Mountain had to walk me all the way to my car. I was feeling kind of cynical, so I asked him what would stop me from coming back into the store with the weapon and ammunition that I had just bought.

He rolled his eyes and said, "Nothing. It's just policy."

You will see signs in various workplaces that say some variation of "We don't need a reason. It's just policy."

That must be a newer thing or maybe just different store by store. I've bought both pistol and shotgun there and they just walked them up to the cashier with me.

this is straying off the topic slightly but ,

the last couple of times i purchased ammo at Academy , i was walked to the register with it .
i guess they may have had issues with theft . maybe people were putting it in their pocket before
getting to the register .

This policy must vary by store. I bought firearms at the Academy in Galveston and Gander Mountain in Sugar Land. At Academy, they brought the weapon to the register. At Gander Mountain, they walked me to my car.

In either store, I could pick shotgun or rifle ammo off the shelf and have handgun ammo handed to me at the counter.

I've bought in the Webster store and they escorted me all the to the car. Service with a smile/

I bought a rifle and ammunition at the Gander Mountain in Corsicana, paid at the gun counter, and walked out alone from there. I've never been escorted with just ammunition at any store.

I have to laugh as I have bought lots of ammo at the Academy in Webster and a couple of guns recently. Ammo, I just took to the register. The guns they walked it to the register, then they copy the receipt for their files and hand me the gun OUTSIDE of the OUTSIDE door.... with a smile and all the time I am carrying. Different stores many times interpret their own internal policies differently. I suspect the managers of each store take the corporate policy and apply their own level of comfort of responsibility and act out the levels we each have noticed.

Ya know, there is probably stuff on the shelves in the camping section that someone could use to blow up the store (camp stoves, lighter fluid, etc.), that they don't even seem to think about.
