Austin area Holster shopping

Post by Bonc_CHL »

Anyone around the Austin area recommend a place with a good CC holster selection? And if they will let you try before you buy.
I am, looking for something for an XD40 Subcompact.

I never would have thought I would be this anxious to find one, I know I have lot of time till my plastic comes in but why not avoid the rush right? HA

In Austin....

If you have Glock, anywhere (probably even Walmart ;-) ).

If you have anything else, the Internet.

McBrides has the best selection I've seen. Red's and Heritage have a small selection. Online is probably your best bet though.

Sportsman's Warehouse used to have a good selection. They are no more.

I haven't been to McBrides. I'd guess they'd be a good spot to check.

The Gun Store in Cedar Park has FIST & Comp-Tac, halfway decent selection I guess. They had a FIST to fit my gun and lots of Glock and 1911 Kydex.

Also the monthly gun show if you want to be hands on. Check out the threads here concerning holsters and belts.

IWBs I'd look directly here and the websites, MTac and others noted (sorry names forget). Sliders et all can be seen on several sporting goods sites:cheaperthandirt etc. and the actual manufacturers of course.

Sorry for the hijack, but, is The Gun Store still in business? I stopped by there last month and they were closed during posted hours, and the shelves looked like they were emptied. It was kinda hard to tell though, since the windows are tinted so dark and the lights were off.

They are now completely open to the public. They have a great selection to try.

GT is great, just did not think they would have alot of CC holsters, but I guess I have to get away from the gun counter next time I am there and look at what else they have.

Does anyone carry IWB in the 5:30ish position? I am a lil front heavy if you know what I mean and am worried about carrying there.

I use a Comptac MTac with XDsubs at the 4:00. I am "front loaded", that is....carry a little extra over my buckle as well. It wears well if you wear it to rear of your side .....3:30 plus position. The Comptac Minotaur can be ordered on line.....I have other XD's so I got the "slider" option that allows the same holster to carry any XD......most of the time I carry an XD45 compact ....4" in the same holster.

There is an excellent review done by someone on the forum, here....including his one year update......I highly recommend this holster if you wear a tucked shirt....guess if you didn't it wouldn't matter.

Here's a photo of mine. Welcome.

Bonc_CHL, you can also try Cabelas. They have a better selection of concealment holsters than I would have guessed. A lot of Bianchi, Uncle Mike's, DeSantis etc. Cedar Park Gun Store, McBride's, and GT Distributors would also be good choices.

But I would highly recommend you consider either Comp Tac or Crossbreed tuckable double-strut kydex/leather hybrid holsters. I've used a Crossbreed now for my Glock and Walther for a few months now and they are simply the best and most comfortable IWB holsters I've ever used.

Surely someone here on the site lives in Austin area and owns one of these for a Springer and will be willing to meet you at range and let you try it out. If not, you're welcome to try my Crossbreed/Glock 23 combo sometime (should be a close enough comparison to how a Crossbreed/Springer would ride).

I was looking at the Crossbreeds, I just was not sure how comfortable they were, they look so large like it would be awkward to carry but I am more then willing to try one out. The price is not too bad for them either.
I looked at a Safariland at GT the other day but the guy could not find one that fit my XD. I may go to Mcbrides or Cabelas this weekend and look, I am in no big rush to get one, I think I still have some time before I get my plastic

I thought that at first too about Crossbreed/Comp Tac. But they are so flat and thin, you hardly feel them. The double struts really help keep them secure, and the leather wraps around your waist very comfortably. They look large and flat, but after you wear them once or twice, they form to the shape of your hips and waist.
