Are you Methodist? Send your Tithe to the gun banners..
I left a Methodist church not long ago. I didn't even know their stance.

Incidentally, they used to be known as the "coalition to ban handguns", and are calling for "less lethal" firearms. Yeah, you read that right.

This was pointed out by one of the Moderators in a much earlier thread on CC to/in church. I've never heard gun control preached from our FUMC pulpit nor do I know any Methodist abolitionists. Until these two items become an issue within my congregation, the head (boss) church's position on these items won't be an issue, nor a concern, for me.

Nor did my Methodist pastor ever mention banning guns. Maybe Jeremiah Wright didn't either. Either way, I've informed the pastor of the Methodist church i was attending why I wont be there for Christmas services. Just think about that group when you put that tithe in the basket. I'm the son of a pastor. Do you think none of your tithe goes to the mother church, the head of the denomination? Do you think it all stays local? If so, I'll give you the low down on how it works.I've already left the Episcopalians, my Father, a doctorate and Reverend through the Anglican church, now the Methodists.Follow the money....

Makes me glad I'm non-denominational and go to a non-posted church!

Just because the main body of a church is anti-gun doesn't mean the entire church is. After all my CHL instructor was a retired methodist pastor and I took my Texas hunters ed course (classroom portion) in a methodist church.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

I am not Methodist, so this doesn't really apply to me (FYI I am Christian and do not label myself as a denomination). I do have an idea for you to think about after reading your comment. No offense intended but I have an observation for you to consider. If you are only going to one service between now and Christmas then I do not think that Methodist pastor will care if you are there or not (I am assuming this from your comment here -"Either way, I've informed the pastor of the Methodist church i was attending why I wont be there for Christmas services."). Perhaps I am incorrect in reading between the lines from your post, but from my experience pastors normally do not pay attention too much to complaints to people who are not regulars -at least I know that the majority of pastors I know would not anyway. I guess I am just saying that your "boycott" may not have had much of an impact.lawrnk wrote:Oldgringo wrote:This was pointed out by one of the Moderators in a much earlier thread on CC to/in church. Ahhh..the "creasters" Christmas and Easter goers. I did not mean just Christmas, I've stopped attending that church and am trying out some baptists ones in the area. The UMC church here was too rock bandish anyways.

Baptists, eh? To each, his/her own. Me, I enjoy an adult beverage every now and then and tend to not impose my will/beliefs on others.lawrnk wrote:Ahhh..the "creasters" Christmas and Easter goers. I had a discussion with one of our pastors about 'The Doctrine' of the Methodist Church. He stated that while the doctrine exists, we don't necessarily have to follow it to the letter. It is 'guidelines' for us to follow, not hard and fast rules.
You will find many liberal mined individuals in any large denomination, and you will find that even within the Methodist or any church, that there are wide differences in beliefs.
My opinion is believe you have the right to carry, go to church and help support those things they do that you believe in. If they start trying to force you to do things against you beliefs, then work against it and help get it changed. Moving away from something that you feel is wrong or not being handled correctly doesn't do anything to help correct it.

Sounds like you have other reasons than their supposed support of banning guns for leaving. If you have a disagreement with one church, it doesn't mean they are all that way. I grew up Methodist and loved the church. When I got married I changed to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) when my wife was a member. The reason they were in that church is her parents got kicked out of the Baptist church they attended for dancing (no joke.) They belonged to a western square dance club and had done an exhibition dance at the Mayfest parade. Someone from church saw them and told the preacher. The next morning they were excommunicated (this was in the 60's, so there have been a lot of changes now.) Father-In-Law was even a deacon.lawrnk wrote:Ahhh..the "creasters" Christmas and Easter goers. Anyway, we moved to another town. We tried the Methodist church and found we liked the First Christian in that town better. Moved again to a large city and didn't like the Christan Church, and liked the Methodist.
So, bottom line, don't blame the whole denomination for things you may not like about an individual church. If you don't like that church, work to help change it. If they won't change, then you are free to move. That is why we live in the United States and have freedom of religion!

Re: Are you Methodist? Send your Tithe to the gun banners..
I was baptised in the First Baptist Church of Metropolis, IL some 55 years ago. Just about exactly a half century ago in my aunt's FBC in Nashville, TN, I came to the realization that this particular denomination was not for me. On a more positive note, Baptists can have good music in their services.Keith B wrote:

No offense taken here, but I've been a Baptist pastor for 30+ years. I've never attempted to impose my will or beliefs on anyone else. I've spent my life warning others that the bridge is out. Whether you put on the brakes or not is entirely up to you - your choice. I could care less whether someone enjoys an "adult beverage." That's not the question that will be asked of each of us when we stand before our Creator.Baptists, eh? To each, his/her own. Me, I enjoy an adult beverage every now and then and tend to not impose my will/beliefs on others.
Guess since we should not try to "impose our beliefs" on others, we should quit encouraging people to get involved in the shooting sports, eh?
