Is Ammo Getting Scarce Again

I was out to Cabela's today , and the ammo seemed to be thinning out again. I was only looking at handgun ammo but would like to hear your thoughts? Harry.

I don't think so. I walked into my local Wal-Mart at noon on a Thursday and was able to buy 6 boxes of 9mm and .40 S&W, with plenty more in stock for other customers to enjoy. The last time I saw ammo in stock at this Wal-Mart had to have been almost a year ago...

I was at Cabela's (Buda) today too. I was hoping they had some 45acp in one of those bulk green dry boxes, but nothing. They only had a few 50 round choices and several different JHP choices.

I saw plenty of 40cal and 9mm.

I did however get of of the metal handgun safes w/key they had on sale for $19.99 - the $10 coupon they sent me. Not bad for less than $11 out the door!

I too was just by Wally World and they had a load of .40 and 9mm, some .25, but no .380 or .45. Lot's of .223 and other rifle.

I bought 100 rounds of .308 Match ammo at Cabelas Fort Worth on Wednesday. There was plenty of that.

IMHO - I don't think ammo is getting any more scarce than it has been.

In fact, most of the Wally Worlds I go to seem to be pretty well stocked with
9MM and .40.

If you want other calibers, though, they don't seem to have as much.

As popular as .45 is I usually don't see it.

Some folks on the forum like to stick with the same caliber in their weapons,
but I would think having multiple calibers in your personal weaponry would
improve your chances to find ammo to fit SOMETHING that you can shoot.

I have yet to find .45 or .380 at the Wal Marts I frequent. If I am buying these, I head to the ranges or gun stores locally. I pay more, but I'm a buyer, not a shopper. I have found some .45 at Dick's Sporting Goods for a good price, but the .380 still seems elusive. When I can afford it, I buy it when I find it. (I'm not a huge fan of Wal Mart anyway!)

One should expect some increase in the demand for ammo right now for two reasons. Christmas (Either for guns that are presents or as presents itself) and Californians stocking up before their new law goes into effect.

It seems that .38 Spec. is equally elusive. I reckon I can understand why .380 acp and .38 Spec. (so many new guns/owners in those calibers?) but why is .45 acp not available in WWB at our neighborhod Wal-Marts?

Essentially AB962 in California which has been signed by the governor. The new law doesn't go into effect until February 2011 and only affects handgun ammunition. However Californians are already buying ammunition to stock up before this law hurts them. The law prohibits internet sales of ammunition as well as requiring the dealer to collect a significant amount of information about the buyer. Additionally it was originally written to limit people to a 50 round purchase per month, however that text was removed. Unfortunately people still believe it is in the law and are buying accordingly.
