Gun Cleaning steps

Post by tauruspt145 »

Ok so i know the basics but id like for anybody who wants to, to post on here the steps you take, what brands/types of cleaners, rods/"specialty" tools you have found to work best for you. i figure this would be helpfull to everyone on the board. Also i think it would be good to add some do's and dont's.

I just use the cleaning rod that came with my AR, a .40 caliber brass brush, an old t-shirt, a few patches, some q-tips, and a bottle of Hoppes (only on my pistols) and a bottle of Breakfree CLP.

For the pistols I just field strip them. Separate the slide, barrel, guide rod, etc. I stick a Hoppes soaked patch into the barrel while I'm cleaning everything else and let it sit.

Then I use a Hoppes soaked q-tip in the crevasses on the slide and wipe it out. Everything else I just give a shot of CLP and wipe it off with an old shirt until it doesn't come back dirty.

The barrel gets hit with a brass brush a few times, then with a CLP soaked patch until it comes out clean.

Lube the slide rails with CLP and put it back together.

AR is similar but I don't use Hoppes on it, only CLP.

Strip it, put it all in an ultra-sonic cleaner (with gun cleaner for this application), dry it, lube with One Shot dry lube, and reassemble.
