Many do not know all that much about the little military service in which this old retiree served proudly. Today I read an interesting article in the Parade magazine which came along with our Sunday Houston Chronicle. Some of you may be interested in the role we are proud to have women play in our service. A most competent woman sniper's job is highlighted in this article. Her skill with her 50 cal. sniper rifle gives me the hook to hang blowing my service's horn here on our forum.
Pictured is her ship, the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman -- 43 years old now, but as lovely as ever, still on the job 365/24/7. Yours truly knows her well. I served aboard her not long after she was commissioned. Just one of her many missions is reported here. Nine years ago Sherman became the first Coast Guard cutter to sail around the world, after her first wartime tour in the Persian Gulf. A proud lady, who has served our nation well, in peace and war, at home and all over the globe.
Anyone out there interested in our least well-known, but possibly most proud, military service can look here:

Thank you for posting this article Coastie. That is a beautiful ship, and I know how proud you are to have served on her.
And thank YOU for your years of service in the U.S.C.G.
