Gold Dot vs LE Gold Dot

Post by EyeToEye »

Need the vast knowledge of the forum members to clarify what I don't know, please.

What is the difference between regular Speer Glold Dot 9mm 115gr HP and Speer LE (Law Enforcement) Gold Dot 9mm 115 gr HP ammo? In other words, what does the LE version have that the regular doesn't have or vice versa?

From what I was told by a factory rep, the difference is in the inspection process. The rounds are built to identical spec's, but the LE ammo goes through an extra, human, inspection to verify the loads look right. The non-LE is all mechanically inspected and then boxed.

The LE also comes in the 50 round box, the standard GD comes 20 rounds to a box.

The LE Gold Dot is loaded with a bonded core bullet for better performance involving barriers.

both should be the same I bought Gold Dots in 50 rds boxes LE marked and even in 350 rd bulk boxes both rounds are 124gr +P in 9mm. the bulk came with a note that those rds are best suited for training due to less quality inspection.

Speer® LE Gold Dot® Duty Ammunition
Speer® LE Gold Dot® Duty Ammunition is designed to deliver the high performance today's law enforcement officers demand. Each Gold Dot bullet is individually engineered to provide shot-to-shot uniformity and ensure optimum performance when fired through a variety of barriers. The result is a cartridge that provides officers the ultimate defense in lethal force confrontations.

Most bullets perform adequately in soft tissue, but fragment or expand prematurely when obstructed by bone, heavy clothing or any number of other potential real life shooting barriers. Gold Dot was the first handgun ammunition to be loaded with high-performance bonded core bullets. Gold Dot's superior process bonds the jacket to the core one molecule at a time, virtually eliminating core jacket separations. That's why Gold Dot is the #1 choice for law enforcement professionals.

All Gold Dot bullets are bonded, the process that is used is similar to the process to make copper plated bullets except they put a Jacket of copper. The only bullet that I know of that holds together better than the Gold Dot is the Barnes DPX bullet loaded by CorBon. As far as differences between LE and Civilian Gold Dot - - - LE comes in a 50 round box and Civilian comes in a 20 round box.

In other words, they are really the same with the exception of the quantity per box. Thanks all for the info.
