Took Class(questions on material)
I had my CHL class on Saturday and have some questions on the material. It appears that they are teaching on the old requirements and not the new legislature on Sept 1st 2009. I pressured them on the fact if fail to show your CHL to a police officer it is not punishable. They also still had me fill out the app with the requirement that student loans are bounds for disqualification. Otherwise in all honesty the class was common sense. I missed one question on the test, due to the wording, and scored 248 on the shooting. Since I have an issue on student loans (currently paying) my instructor informed to just answer no on if you are in default. I am wondering you opinion on how to answer this question.
Re: Took Class(questions on material)
Even when defaulted state loans were a disqualification, they were a disqualification only when you had been declared finally in default.
My understanding is that means the debtor had quit paying and the state had given up trying to collect.
If you are making payments, it should not be a problem.
It seems quite a few instructors are not up to speed on the 2009 law changes.

Re: Took Class(questions on material)
When you receive your DPS packet, it will have the NEW FORM that doesn't have the student loans question. Get that notarized and send that form in, not the one from the packet your class gave you.
The DPS packet you will receive has a few updated forms, I would suggest using those forms when you send it in.

Re: Took Class(questions on material)
What about filling it out online. Why has that not been updated? I got my forms notorized in class. Not looking forward to doing it again, but if I have to I will.
Re: Took Class(questions on material)
I also had a question on some more material I just remembered. I have been reading on here that you can carry at church as long as it is not posted with 30.06. Well I took my class on saturday and my instructor insisted you cannnot carry on church. I have see someone post the law here that says its prohibited, but with a subsection that allows.
Any help would be great.

Re: Took Class(questions on material)
Read farther down on statute 46.035 in the LS-16 you received from class and you will see section (i). That is where it states churches, hospitals, amusement parks, etc. must be posted 30.06 before you are prohibited to carry.Shu wrote:I also had a question on some more material I just remembered. Re: Took Class(questions on material)
My question is why do they make that confusing. What is need for a subsection? Was this added on at later time? My opionon would be just stated that churches and amusement parks need to posted with 30.06 or leave it out all toghether.
Re: Took Class(questions on material)
This is the situation. Originally these locations were off-limits to CHL. In a later legislative session (I believe 2005) they amended the statute to require posting of 30.06 at these to make them off-limits. Instead of rewording the whole statute, they just added section (i). It was an easy way to amend it, but is confusing if you don't read the whole statute, which unfortunately your instructor apparently never has.Shu wrote:My question is why do they make that confusing. Shame your CHL instructor doesn't feel the need to stay abreast of all the new laws though.

Re: Took Class(questions on material)
My instructor was decent, but I fealt that I was more aware of certain statues then he was. This is because I did a lot of research on this before making a decision to get my CHL. My theory on this is I want to understand the law so that I can cover my butt. I am going to look over the book I had, but I was looking for this subsection to prove to him I was right, but could not find it. I beleive my version was 2007-2008

The state doesn't care about the score, but the person who does well can be proud of that fact.vinnier6 wrote:your test scores dont matter...
Can you explain that in more detail?...not to mention that most take the written as a group....

Re: Took Class(questions on material)
In various posts, I've read where the instructor's didn't know current law, taught
incorrect information etc etc. The class I took was all-inclusive, photos, prints etc.
The instructor made the class time informative and as interesting as possible. We
had open discussion, some video material, direct explanation of many CHL statutes,
kind of a show & tell regarding various weapons and methods available for concealed carry.
One thing the instructor stressed, read the CHL handbook cover to cover, several times.
Good advice.
