CHL Application required before class?

As the subject line eludes to, I'm wondering if I have to have the CHL application prior to taking my renewal class. I've been trying to find this out on the DPS website and I'm getting nowhere.

Also, with the online application that is around now, do I need an application packet at all?

In a word, no. if you wait til after May 1st. Your instructor will provide your chl-100 form. No more need for prints pictures, or affadavits on renewals.
