3rd time for renewal !

Post by sjones »

Got my renewal notice and pin number saturday.Went online today and filed application and paid by cc. I called austin and talked to a woman at DPS.She said all I had to do was send in the receipt and trace number they gave me.I don't have to take the 4 hour class or requalify on the range any more, just had to read the new rules and laws on the web site.So off in the mail.I wasn't due until oct.25.I figured I wouldn't get the application until july some time. They are getting it out early. Now I'll have to see how long it takes to get the new license. sj

Can you expand on that some? Are you saying on your third renewals no more class or qualify? You do on 1st and 2nd though?
If so i was not aware of that....I wish i had renewed my second one that expired in 2004...just got it back April 28th.

Yes,on yourthird time you don't have to do the class or range time any more. You can do it on line,There is a place online to edit changes like your address, phone #,etc. They will use your picture and prints from the second renewal.Being as I'm a senior it only cost me $35.00.You don't have to pay an instructor either. When you do it on line and print the form out you will get a trace number and a receipt for payment, you just send that in the mail and thats it. sj

Beginning with your third, you only need take the class every other time.

So on your fourth, you will need to attend the class.

House Bill 1839
Effective: 9-1-07

House Bill 1839 amends the Government Code to change the time frame within which a person applying for a third or subsequent renewal of a license to carry a concealed handgun must complete a continuing education course in handgun proficiency and obtain a handgun proficiency certificate, to ensure that the license holder is not required to complete the course or obtain the certificate more than once in any 10-year period.
