How long is a CHL class good for? (before sending paperwork)

Post by Grog »

From what I've seen, If I qualify with a semi-auto, I can carry either that or a revolver. If I qualify with a revolver, I'm stuck with only a revolver.

I own a Glock 17 and three revolvers, and after a move to TX and no job yet, it may be necessary to sell items that can later be replaced (and I have planned on getting a Glock 19 to replace the 17 anyway).

Money being what it is, I have thought of taking the class first and applying for the CHL when I have the extra money. That way I'd be able to carry whichever I want, sell the Glock for extra cash and would not be in a rush to do all the changes that are needed for a CHL (TX DL, etc). I'd be able to defend myself rather well with what I have, no worried there

So, how long is the class certificate good for before applying with the state?

I can't answer your base question, but I will say that if the issue is having the right weapon for a possible later application for CHL, most instructors have weapons that they will loan, either free or at a small fee, to take the class.
Just throwing you another option that you may not have thought about. Take the class later and apply later, with a loaner weapon.
in Houston/Galveston, see Tom Estep (ElGato on this forum). He does a great class and I believe he loaned (at no charge other than ammo if I remember right) a couple weapons to some in the class I was in.

Two years to get the application in after taking the class. Unless you applied and paid online, then only one year.

And yes, most instructors have some sort of loaner/rental program for qualification. We rent Glocks for $20 and include the ammo. I think that is pretty standard in this area.
