Howdy,
I had an hour to kill today while waiting on a new pair of glasses, so I took a gander over to MegaLo Mart to see how ammo supplies were looking. I wound up picking up a Marlin .17HMR Bolt Action Rifle as I needed a varmint rifle and my AR build was slower than expected. Anyways, I was curious on what y'all think of it as a 'yote rifle. It's a fast shooter and I would go for head shots...its ballistics are pretty sweet and ammo is not *too* expensive for what it is.
Thoughts?

Re: .17 HMR
My son has one. Fun as heck to shoot and very accurate. If you have any doubts about using it as a varmint rifle, head on over to youtube and search .17 HMR and Coyote. I didn't post any links here so as not to offend.

I've head shot two feral hogs with my Savage .17 cal. One weighed about 70 pounds and the other around 250. Both dropped like stones.
I used FMJ's that I had to send off for from Graff & Sons. You can find polymer tipped practically everywhere ammo is sold, but finding FMJ's, not so easy...
Oh yeah, the bullets penetrated the tough noggins, but didn't exit.

Re: .17 HMR
I do think I remember hearing something about a recall of the .17 HMR 597 by Remington. However, I believe the problem was related to the semi-auto HMRs. I think there's a thread here in the forum somewhere about it but I was unable to find it.
