Got a New 1911 Yesterday

Post by PJK »

Friday evening my wife and I watched my cousins children for a few hours. When she came to pick them up she was talking about a new Nersa Thunder she was buying. I asked her why she told me she did not like the shooting the LLAMA XI that her dad had given her a few years ago. It was heavy and too big to carry for personal defense. Well I was looking at it and telling her it was a nice looking gun. Then out of the blue she gives it to me. I think I came out on the better end of this deal! Two hours with kids splashing in our pool in exchange for a new gun. Score!!!!

From what I can tell it is a Spanish military version build in 1975. It is chambered in 9mm Parabellum. In doing research this is actually a 9mm Luger, so it takes all the ammo I already have. I tore it down and cleaned it up and will be heading to the range tomorrow. Range report to follow.

This is my first 1911, so any input or comments on care / upgrades would be welcomed.

Here are a few picutres.

You poor man. Once you get a 1911 they tend to multiply in your safe(due to I just have to have one more 1911 and then I will quit). Congrats on the new gun and the price was right. Use a lithium based food grade grease on the slide(will not stain clothes) and shoot the heck out of it. Won't be long before you want a 1911 .45acp.

I always use the Royal Purple gun oil on all of my guns. http://www.royalpurple.com/gun-oil.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Would this not be good?

What is an example of the lubricant you are suggesting. I am assuming it is not Crisco!!!

I use RIG grease on all my slides, and oil the trigger and guts with FP-10.

Enjoy that 1911 - it will soon be joined by others. I have 8 now. Love them!

Didn't you mean a Bersa Thunder? :smilelol5:

Boy, that's a nice gift. Enjoy it. I don't own any 1911s yet but I have a feeling that will change soon.

The Royal Purple is great for guns along with most other synthetic motor oils. I use Mobil 1 exclusively on all my guns except for my Garand I use Lubraplate on it.

edit: I thought you were using Royal Purple motor oil - - - is the gun oil in a spray can? It's hard to put a small amount of lube where you want it. It should be real good stuff spray can or not.
