5.11 covert khaki review

Post by 74novaman »

I'm generally very leery of 'tacti-cool' anything, but I got a pair for 17 bucks at a closeout, so figured I'd try them out.

The pants have the look of a normal pair of dress khakis, which is nice.

That being said, the small zipper clasps on the side pockets are noticeable if someone is observant enough to be looking for them. In fact, these clasps are the biggest problem on the pants to me. They're small enough I'd be worried about being able to unzip a pocket to access a spare magazine in an urgent situation, but large enough to still be noticeable. Perhaps Velcro might have been a better option?

At this point I'd feel more comfortable keeping spare magazines in a mag pouch on the belt, or in the front pockets. Maybe my cell phone could go in a side pocket.

The one thing I LOVE about the pants is how flexible they are. I can fully bend my knees and the pants stretch with me.

In addition, they seem very durable, though that can only truly be determined through some rough use.

In summary, I would buy another pair for less than 20 bucks, but not sure I'd pay the retail 70 dollars for them.

Thanks for reading. :tiphat:

I wear them daily at work and agree with the comfort and flexibility - they don't restrict movement at all really.

No one notices the zippers at all. I've had one person say, "Oh, you have zippers on your pants." They had seen the zippers in the pocket, not on the side.

Great pants for the price ($20).

I got a free belt with each of the pairs that I own too!

Are the zippers nylon or metal. My job requires "No Metal" to a point if you beep you don't go into work. So basically everyone is running around in scrubs and PJ's.

I bought 3 short-sleeve shirts, a pair of shorts, a pair of pants, and some boots from 5.11 Tactical not too long ago. This was my first experience with their products, and I have to say that I am quite impressed with the fit and quality.

Metal - does that mean that your clothing would permanently be stuck somewhere? :shock:

TAM - I agree, I've become a big fan!

I picked up a few of the "covert carry" button up short sleeve shirts the other day (buy one at 20% off, get second free :hurry: ). Wore one today for first time and really liked it. Not as heavy or hot as I was afraid they might be (though temp only got into mid 80s today, we'll see what happens when we hit 100+).

Really drapes perfectly and conceals completely. I think I could even carry OWB under it.

Been less impressed with their pants .... "too tactical" for my regular use (though they are extremely well made and have a ton of pockets). But might need to try this "cover khaki" type.

To the OP, do the covert khakis have the adjustable waistband like the BDUs? Where it slides in and out a bit to adjust for the proper fit?

Yes, you can. I do.

I like the tac pants, personally. They're certainly well made, and I already wear that kind of pant anyway. I've been happy with the ones I picked up at the GT sale last weekend. I can understand that they're not for everyone, though. From my experience with 5.11 products, I'd bet the khakis work well.

really like my pants but not sure will ever put mags in the inner pockets and the side pocket is so small maybe a tac light. But good front pockets and love the stretch waistband. Thanks for the review on the convert shirt was next on my list to get. Looks would work well

I have 2 pair of these 5.11 Covert Khaki Pants.

http://www.lapolicegear.com/511-tactica ... pants.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I find them very comfortable. I use the side zipper pocket for my EDC knife on the weak side. I put my spare magazines in the hidden pockets inside the front pockets also on the weak side, and my flashlight goes in the hidden inside pocket on the strong side. I like the elastic waistband as it stretches enough to make wearing my IWB DM Bullard Dual Carry holster for my S&W 908 very comfortable. Or sometimes I carry the Taurus PT140 in the Kholster. I use a Widerness Instructor Belt with polymer stiffener in conjuction with Perry suspenders to keep everything in place. The outside zippers on the pants are not noticeble to me, and the zipper on the hidden pockets don't show at all. I wear them to church, work, or just casual when I don't want to wear jeans.

I also have 2 of these shirts which I usually wear with t-shirt as a undershirt. http://www.lapolicegear.com/5tacocashss.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They make concealment of my weapon easy whether I wear them open or buttoned. They are suprisely cool even here in north Texas hot weather.

Update: Wore mine as my "dress pants" to a wedding this weekend. Didn't get a second glance from anyone, even the cop sitting at my table. :coolgleamA:

I have a pair of the covert khakis for a couple of years now and I have to say for pants that aren't jeans or bdus I love them. I like how they're thick and not thin and flimsy feeling like other khakis. I used them for work when I was in limbo. I haven't been able to notice the zippers and neither has anyone else. Each of the side pockets can hold two pairs of rolled up latex gloves. I now use these pants for when I have to dress up and they take a crease well. I haven't had to use any starch on them. I also like how deep the front pockets are since I don't keep anything in my back pockets.
