Busy and daunting carry day
I have been carrying every day since I got my plastic, but today was a bit more of a challenge than normal. I carry the Kahr MK9 full stainless. I have a Fobus paddle holster that works well, holds the gun away from my body, but is not REALLY stealthy. For a more stealthy carry, I have relied on a Galco inside the belt holster that holds the gun much closer to my body, but also puts it up against my skin. Normally, I have a t-shirt on, with a Polo style untucked, so persperation is not that big of an issue.
Today, I have both my kids, and two others from my bro-in-law. I stated the day at the neighborhood splashpad, so shorts and a tshirt were called for. After that, a flag football game in the sun. This afternoon, I am cooking burgers and hot dogs at the house. I tried the Fobus, but it was a little too bulky, so I went with the Galco. Carrying was no problem at all, but when I got home, the sweat was all over the gun where it touched my body. Going into the summer months with an "active" lifestyle with kids, I am normally limited to shorts and tshirt.
I took a break from cooking, and went to my closet and wiped the sweat off the gun, and wiped it down with a gun oil cloth, but it is still up against my side.
I like the stability and safety of the Fobus holster, but it is too bulky considering the light clothing. The Galco is awesome to conceal, and comfortable, but I will sweat all over the gun. I need something that is tuckable (supertuck...et all), but the sweat thing is kinda freaking me out.
Given my summer (shorts and a tshirt) plans, what is my best option for comfort and keeping my really nice gun away from my sweat?
This is my first summer to carry, and I can see this as an issue I will have to put up with every year, but this is my first year, so I am trying to lower my learning curve and ask your opinion on how best to handle a day like this.

Re: Busy and daunting carry day
My vote is for a Supertuck. I wore it with shorts and an untucked T-shirt all day yesterday around the grandkids and in-laws. This morning, with dress pants and a buttondown shirt tucked in to Church. It's the only holster I use for my .45.
Re: Busy and daunting carry day
Secede,
My normal attire is Jeans (if working), or shorts as soon as possible after work/weekends.
Under-armor T-shirt (or Nike dry shirt) - one of the shirts that wicks away the sweat from your skin. They are not cheap, ($20 or so each) but if you go with cotton (which i tried first) it is Hot!.
(I like the T-shirt under the holster as the holster still slightly irritates me)
Then my Mini-Tuck over the Under-armor. Then a T-shirt or golf shirt over that as cover
Today, my wife and I took our dogs to the dog park in Clear Lake City. they both got dirty, so we showered them there.
We keep towels in the car for this, but we also like to walk around the park, to let them air-dry, but also a bit of exercise for us.
So we were about 1/2 way around the park, and I was hot. the humidity was getting to me and my cotton T-shirt was starting to get heavy and hot.
So I was thinking, hmmm, how long is my UA T-shirt, if I pull my t-shirt off, will my holster/weapon be covered.
I decided yes was that answer.
So I pulled my UA T-Shirt over my weapon and then stripped off my over T-shirt. I looked down, didnt see anything. my UA was long enough to cover a few inches below weapon and I continued on the walk.
On the way home, we stopped at Kroger's (wife stayed in the car with the dogs). Bear in mind, now I am going into a very populated store, with only my UA over my weapon and it was great!
I got home, went in the bathroom, looked in the mirror to see if there was any printing, and I was truly amazed, no printing at all.
Btw, I carry about 4:00.
We went back to Krogers a couple hours later, for normal grocery shopping (the morning was just for breakfast stuff). So I knew I could have put more cover on, but decided not to. I was very comfortable and had no concerns with printing or concealment at all.
I would guess that with your weapon, you would need the Supertuck, but if it is anything like my Minituck, its well worth the $90 or so. (also Crossbreed will give you 10% off if you are an NRA member).
If you prefer Comp-Tac, I would think those holsters would be consistent with the Crossbreed.
As far as sweat. yes the UA did pull the sweat away from my body, but did get it on the holster, but nothing at all on the weapon. the horsehide kept it away.
yesterday, I did the IDPA at PSC - same type of set up, but once I arrived there I pulled my outer T-Shirt off and had my UA as concealment for the IDPA match, so from 9a until 2pm, I had my holster against bare skin and yes, it was HOT yesterday. Again, no issues at all.
So as far as I am concerned, Get a holster with the Horsehide (that keeps the entire weapon off of your skin) and you should be good.
Splurge on the holster and it will be a great investment, if not only in weapon cleaning time.

Re: Busy and daunting carry day
Considering I have over $1200 into the gun, 90 bucks for a holster is not an issue. I have been looking into the supertuck, and it seems like a no brainer. I was just shocked at the amount of sweat today.
Wearing a tshirt with another undershirt just looked goofy. I will have to look into the under-armor stuff. Thanks for the direction.
I am going on vacation in three weeks (depending on the oil spill will dictate where) and want to get my summer carry worked out before then. Unfortuantly, pre-order times for supertucks take a bit longer than that.
Looks like there his horse hide in my future..

FYI.. Spectre Firearms stocks Crossbreed. Last time I was there they had a large quantity on the shelves.SecedeTX wrote: I am going on vacation in three weeks (depending on the oil spill will dictate where) and want to get my summer carry worked out before then. As usual, you'd better call first before making the trip.

If the leather backing is at all a concern for you, then the CTAC could be your answer.

Target has champion brand compression shirts for ony $9.99 and sometimes they have them for $7.50. Works just as good and UA with out the brand nake looks which if you are going to wear under another shirt is fine. I have a few that I wear when mt biking and riding my motorcycle as well as carring around the house right now until my plastic comes in. Really makes a difference when carrying and doing most other things in this Texas heat.

For what it's worth, I've just converted to the classic "Wifebeaters" under my T-Shirts and polo shirts...keeps the holster off my skin.

I tried that route first, but it simply gets hot.cbunt1 wrote:Wifebeaters" under my T-Shirts and polo shirts...keeps the holster off my skin
So i read on here, people were talking about the Under Armor, I bought 1 - to test, and WOW, what a difference.
If you haven't tried it, and don't want to shell out $20 per T-shirt, don't try them. But if you want comfort, go for it

You absolutely need to change to a completely sedentary life-style. My root-beer belly lends an added degree of concealment to my carry.

+1 on the crossbreed supertuck and the UA type tshirts. I normally wear a tshirt and shorts on the weekends and the moisture wicking shirts help a lot. I have a variety from the ones you can get from target to the nike brand. They all work the same for me. I dont wear an under shirt between the holster and my skin though. I never liked undershirts. I carry both OWB and IWB and never have a problem concealing with a tshirt.

Cross Bread Supertuck-
Accept no substitues. I carry a full size 1911 everyday, shorts, jeans, dress pants. Makes no difference. It is the only holster I use. Gun never touches my body. Plus I wear sleeveless T shirts under whatever cover garment I am using. You'd be surprised how they help you stay cool.
