If anyone remembers the mares leg, this is an affordable copy.
But officer, it
REALLY IS a pistol!!
Might have to start wearing a duster.
Pistol cartridge lever-actions have had attention of the American public since the days of the Old West when having a rifle and pistol that shoot the same caliber just made sense.
There are numerous variations―rifles, carbines, standard loop, oversized loop—including Rossi’s Model ’92 hybrid—the Ranch Hand. This Mare’s Leg version (think Steve McQueen in “Wanted: Dead or Alive”) is a short, 24-inch carbine, available in three popular pistol rounds— .38 Spl./.357 Mag., .44 Mag. and .45 Colt.
The Ranch Hand’s 12-inch barrel complies with federal regulations, and features a gold-bead front sight with an adjustable buckhorn rear sight and an oversized loop lever. MSRP is $536.
Caliber: .38 Spl./.357 Mag., .44 Mag., .45 Colt
Action: lever-action repeating pistol
Receiver: investment cast steel
Finish: matte blue
Magazine Capacity: six rounds
Overall Length: 24”
Barrel Length: 12”
Rifling: six groove, 1:30” RH twist
Weight: 4 lbs.
Sights: adjustable buckhorn rear, milled front post with brass insert
Trigger: non-adjustable single stage; 5 lbs. 7 ozs.
Stock: Brazilian hardwood
Accessories: manual, safety lock
Suggested Retail Price: $536

Got out a tape measure. Slung high under my arm, it would hang to mid thigh.
Would definitely require a duster to conceal.
Impressive truck gun, though.
But just think how much fun we'd have practicing.

If that's a 30-30, then that might be do-able...But if it's a .45-70...
OUCH!!!
I still like it!!!

Wow, thanks for the info. I've been wanting a Mare's Leg for a while, but didn't want to pay $2,000. This looks like a good alternative.

Bud's doesn't show any in stock, but they show a 'Last Price' of the .357 of $383.00.
I also buy a lot from The Exchange in Brookings, SD. I've asked them for p & a.

If I were going to have one as a truck gun, I'd just as soon have the full length model. This one doesn't look - at least from the picture - like something you'd want to shoot from the shoulder. With that abbreviated stock, I keep thinking of how my face would look after that hammer spur had dug a chunk out of it. Is there something I'm not getting?

Sounds like we'd all like a couple. I've been watching Gunbroker for a Mare's Leg in my area for a couple years. Anyone seen these Rossi's for sale in Texas?
Edit: I am trying Sportingarms.com Let you know what I find.
Thanks,
JW

Did you catch that it's chambered for pistol cartridges, not .30-30 or similar.
It ought to be a blast to shoot.
Heck, I've got enough 336s and 1894s. This is neat!!!
That and they usually run $2000+.

Not to hijack, but I am looking at a gun online from The Exchange in SD. Can I assume you find them completely trustworthy, and how do you rate their service?
Thanks

It's a great, family operation. Very friendly. Honest. Usually ships same day as ordered.

The .357/38 would be handy. I like 44 Rem.also. Do you guys think there would be some advantages to the 45 Long Colt?
Wonder if the 45 LC version will handle a 410 gauge shell?
But, if this thing actually handles 44 MAG and .357 MAG I'd likely go that way first over the 45 Colt.
What are you guys thinking?
Thanks,
JW

Personal preference. Not to suggest doing it, but the .45 Colt can be loaded much hotter than the .44 Mag. If you already have several guns that can safely handle the hot loads (Redhawks, old model Vaqueros, Blackhawks, Super Blackhawk Hunter, Win Trapper 94, etc) then it increases the neat factor.
.410? Wouldn't cycle through the short action. If you want something that does, there is a revolving Judge rifle.

One of my passions is motorcycle camping and I while I always carry a handgun, usually an S&W .44, I am always on the look out for ways to incorporate a rifle. My wife comes with me most of the time and she takes up the vast majority of the baggage space, so I am really limited. Something like this could be just the ticket. Thanks for the post>
