Man shoots self at houston gun show

I know the story is dated back to 2007 but I figured it was worth reading for sake of the debate about 30.06 signs being posted at gun shows and their legality. I couldn't find what eventually happened to the guy but I would certainly be interested in knowing whether he got charged with anything.

HOUSTON, June 4 (UPI) -- A man may face charges and may lose his concealed handgun permit after shooting himself in the hand at the High Caliber Gun & Knife Show in Houston.

The man knowingly entered the gun show at the George R. Brown Convention Center with a loaded weapon, which is against the law, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

Event's organizer, Todd Bean, said the man was attempting to disassemble his Glock .40-caliber handgun while shopping for a new part, when he shot himself.

"He pulled the trigger barrel over his hand and shot himself in the fatty part of the hand," Bean told the Chronicle.

The man was treated on-site and also taken to a hospital.

Bean said there were signs posted at the entrance that state that no one can enter the gun show with a loaded weapon and that if the man is convicted of violating the statute, he could lose his concealed handgun license, the newspaper said.

It shouldn't be surprising that someone who violates the law would also violate standard gun handling safety procedures. Fortunately he shot himself, and not someone else.

I was wondering that myself. Also, what exactly is the "fatty" part of the hand? Parts of my body may have some fat, but not so much my hand. I can't imagine shooting my hand anywhere with minimal damage (implied). Lots of tendons & bones and stuff in there!

Methinks the writer intended it this way: "He pulled the trigger, barrel over his hand, and shot himself in the fatty part of the hand." Although, "...trigger, hand in front of barrel,..." would have made a lot more sense.

I'm not in favor of many restrictions re: RKBA, but the glaring lack of knowledge and safety I've seen at many shows, along with the flagrant violations of the 4 Rules, makes me supportive of some level of control. Still makes me feel unlcean to even say that, though...

Nah, I bet the fellow I ran on in Oak Cliff that had Plaxicoed and turned himself into a eunuch was more embarrassed.

No fatty part of the hand but the webbing between the index finger and thumb has some margin for error. Though there is a large vein and artery (branching from the brachial) running through there and that could get messy.

No law was violated, the 30.06 signs werent valid. safety procedures were violated though.

Nope don't want to shoot myself nowhere. Got my thumb caught in the slide of my LCP that's all the pain I want to inflect on myself from my own gun. Maybe they are calling the part of the hand below the little finger the "fatty" part; looking at my own hand that is the only part that has a little meat on it.

I think the text should have read "He pulled the trigger with the barrel over his hand and shot himself in the fatty part of the hand..." Still not precise language, but better.

The "fatty part of the hand" is probably the meaty part between thumb and index finger, or the meaty part on the edge of the palm between the base of the pinky and wrist. Those of us with more 'insulation' know what this is. It all depends on how he was trying to disassemble the gun.

I have seen pics of "Glock hand" before where there is a hole in the edge of the palm below the pinky.

I was at a Pasadena gun show about 10 years ago when there was an "accidental discharge". I almost had one right when I heard it.

I can recall three NDs at gunshows when I was present. They were all the fault of careless dealers.
