Re: Houston is Packing (CHL) Heat
This is simple math. One in 55 is about the statewide average.
The Houston metropolitan area is the fourth largest in the U.S. and largest in Texas. It is largely conservative and affluent. Of course there are going to be more people with CHLs in the Houston area than anywhere else.
The part that is a bit of a challenge is that Houston and its suburbs are distributed across Harris, Fort Bend, Liberty, Montgomery, and (ahem) Galveston counties, so no one can point to a single city or county as a focus.
League City in Galveston County had the highest per-capita number of CHLs a few years ago for exactly the demographic reasons that I cited above.

Re: Houston is Packing (CHL) Heat
My zip code is not because I live inside the loop. It's interesting that the vast majority of those listed are suburbs - which makes sense. I would imagine that being inside the loop, the inner city and other not-so-lovely areas are not what one would consider havens for legal concealed carry. I'm happy my parents live in one of those zips, though.

The overall cost of a CHL including the pistol itself, the course, the application fee, and a few boxes of ammo is at least $700. Then you get to the holster and belt. That is going to correlate with income.

Let us also not discount the fact that several of these "selected" individuals in more urban settings will no doubt fail the background check.seamusTX wrote:The overall cost of a CHL including the pistol itself, the course, the application fee, and a few boxes of ammo is at least $700. Looks like Katy is pretty well "covered". As is my house...

And many don't care. They understand that concealed means concealed better than some.WEC wrote:Let us also not discount the fact that several of these "selected" individuals in more urban settings will no doubt fail the background check.

I guess I just don't have the knack for spotting 'em. I have looked for months now in Wal-mart and Kroger to see if I can spot a 'definitely packing'. I got a lot of possibles, but none I was sure of.

I posted this in response to the seminars thread, but thought you might find it interesting in light of this current discussion:seamusTX wrote:This is simple math. One in 55 is about the statewide average.

MSAs lag actual population trends and are somewhat political. The Chicago MSA currently includes Joliet, which is 50 miles away.
I grew up in Chicago, and there is no way Joliet is "in" or "around" Chicago. Joliet, while not a bad town overall, is where Chicago sends its undesirables. It's like saying that Huntsville is "in" or "around" Houston.
