Quick Taurus Turnaround

Post by Embalmo »

Guys,

I'm very impressed with how quickly Taurus got my revolver repaired and returned. I Shipped it UPS on the 1st and got it back a couple of hours ago. I hope it's fixed for good. It's my Taurus 94; the adjustable site assembly and elevation screws never could stay in place after a couple of rounds fired. It'll be a couple of week 'till my next opportunity to try it out, but there's an unopened brick of Federal waiting for her.

I too am glad Taurus has a gurantee which allowed me to have my 22 mag fixed. I only had to pay for shipping it to them in FL. However, I had no communication from them, either email or otherwise, as to what they did to fix the gun. I'm not even sure they did anything since it still has the same problem. They possible could have replaced the barrel, but I can't tell. There wasn't even a note with the returned gun explaining what repairs they did.

Needless to say, I'm not a big Taurus fan and probably won't be anytime soon.

Well I actually got to try it out last night 'cause my friends invited me out of the blue and the repaired sights held up. I didn't read brilliant reviews when I bought the gun, but I was dead set on a .22 snubbie and there wasn't a big selection. Hopefully I won't need to spend another $13 shipping anytime soon. In all fairness, the sights have been the only issue, so if the problem is corrected once and for all, this is one heckuva fun range gun.

I had and sold a Browning Buckmark, which is a superior gun, but it just felt more like a long distance hole punch; but my Taurus 94 Ultralite is a louder version of my old 5 ring capgun that I LOVED as a child in the '70s.

Dumb question, but how exactly do you ship a gun back to the manufacturer for warranty work? Is this just a standard UPS delivery, or do you need to go through an FFL? I have a Taurus and a Kel Tec that are each having issues. I was hoping they would get better after breaking in, but the Taurus is just as bad (FTF about 20% of the time), and the Kel Tec is getting worse (FTE, FTF, and the magazine is also popping out when I shoot - no, my finger is not on the mag release).

Both guns were bought new and have warranties, but I have been dreading the process of shipping them back (assuming I needed to go the FFL route, etc).

No need for FFL. A good manufacturer will send you a prepaid FedEx or UPS package to ship directly to them.
Others want you to ship on your dime.

I've done UPS online twice to ship a gun (and once in person @ FedEx). It's a hassle when you ship it in person 'cause they ask all kinds of awkward questions like, "What's in there?" and they panic when you say the "G" word. The Internet doesn't ask anything except what is weighs and how much is it worth, or if you want to give them more money to offset the carbon footprint. "rlol" Theeeeeen you just pay the $13 with your card, print the label, and drop it off wherever you see UPS on the door or spend the extra money to have a guy come to your house. I never even buy the box; a gun box (I have many for just such an occasion), a brown paper bag, and a roll of clear tape packs it up nicely.

I had a problem with a new Kahr pistol I bought at Jerry's Texas Guns (shop) on Bandera in San Antonio. I took it back to Jerry and he shipped it for me on his dime (or maybe Kahr's). It came straight back to me. If you bought new from a dealer and don't want to go the "Embalmo" route, you could check with the dealer to see if he would do it.

When I lived in San Antonio, Jerry had higher prices than some of the other gun stores, but he also seemed to provide good after sales service (and had the largest holster selection). One other time I bought a used revolver that turned out to have a problem when shooting rapid fire (the cylinder would spin wildly instead of just incrementing to the next round). Jerry fixed it for no additional charge.

Let's hope it holds up better than this one. This is after the guy got it back from Taurus, and fired a few rounds.

I'm not clear-It looks like the barrel has been removed. Did it fall or jettison off in the process of being fired?

Correct. I was told that on the 3rd or 4th round, the barrel blew off.

Supposedly auto-loaders are more complicated (at least our CHL process thinks so), but there just seem to be much more danger to the shooter with a revolver, with those REALLY big bullets that go in some of them. I know, and follow all the basic rules of shooting, but I only recently discovered that you can (apparently) blow your thumb apart from the gas escaping from the chamber of a big revolver. (I might be saying it wrong) And I saw a video of a women accidentally popping off a second round in the air from losing control of a .500 Magnum; she looked like she was doing everything right until she pulled the trigger (twice).

I guess you would have to put your thumb over the cylinder which makes no sense. I shoot my little revolver the same way I shoot my autos (thumb over thumb) and a couple times I've felt something that felt like a mild little spark on my left hand and thumb; not enough to say "ouch" or even flinch my hand, but enough to make me wonder what would happen if my thumb or hand were closer to where the primer ignition happens. Hmm.
