Taurus PT738 TCP Range Report

Post by texasjeep44 »

Well I broke down and bought a TCP this week. Academy had them for 259 or so. Wife thought the pink one looked good but I convinced her we didn't need to spend the extra 20 bucks since the stainless and black were on sale. Whew, don't think I could carry a pink micro gun. I decided to get a pocket pistol since I am selling my Bersa Thunder to my brother. Probably the only pistol I will ever sell, but he is looking for a gun and likes it, so I am letting him have it the various holsters and 4 mags for 200 bucks. The Thunder isn't small enough for pocket carry, and I have plenty of other things to carry on my belt.

Overall, I was pleased with the fit and finish of this little pocket pistol. I took it apart, cleaned it up, worked the action the first couple of days probably a hundred times or so.

So today after trying to get out of town for close to an hour and an half, I finally headed to the range. I picked up some Remington Sureshot 95 gr on the way out there. I also had a few hundred Georgia Arms with me.

I started out by shooting the course of fire for the Texas CHL, 20 rds from 3 yds, 20 rds from 7 yds, then 10 rds from 15 yds. Below is that target with the first 50 rds through the gun.

The failures that I had were:

Rd 11 ftf, rd 44 ftf, rd 49 ftf. First fifty were the Remington Sureshot.

Rd 68 fft, rd 80 ftf, rd 99 ftf, rd 101 ftf, rd 143 ftf, rd 168 ftf. Rds 51 through 168 were Georgia Arms factory reloads, pretty dirty stuff.

Then I set up another target and ran through the course of fire again for the Texas CHL.

Rd 180 I had a failure to go into battery fully. Rds 169 through 218 were Remington Sureshot. Below is the target for the second course of fire.

I did not change my point of aim on either the first of second course of fire. I simply kept shooting with the sights zeroed on the X ring. Personally I think that the shots being low left are a result of the short distance to the trigger and the trigger almost being at the second knuckle of my shooting finger. I did experiment a bit, during the session and tried to place just the first portion of the trigger finger on the trigger, that seemed to help a bit.

After those 218 rds I shot 50 more GA rds and had a few failures to fully go into battery and a couple of failures to eject. The gun was really dirty by this time. Then I field stripped it and cleaned it up a bit with some FP10 and qtips, dried off that, then lubed it slightly and reassembled it.

I then shot 50 rds of GA with zero failures. Then I loaded 5 rds of Remington JHP, and 5 rds of Cor Bon JHP. There were no failures on the Rem, but one ftf on the 3rd rd of Cor Bon. The 10 JHP's were the only ones that were in the .380 ammo can. I wish I had checked for more before heading out.

Overall I was happy with the first 300 or so rds out of this thing. I was anticipating that my hand would be suffering after that many rounds, but honestly I didn't notice any sore spots and I am no worse for the wear. The P3AT's and LCPs that I have shot previously were not so kind to my hands for some reason. The sights on the gun are minimal, but for a pocket pistol and the close range shooting what it was designed for they are ok. The carry case that came with it, well I haven't made up my mind as to whether I will ever use it or not. It is kind of big, but would do in a pinch if you had no other way to carry the gun.

I am not ready to call this one good for carry yet, I will have to run some more rounds through it and find out if it is going to be picky with the type of bullet it likes to digest. From what I have noticed the GA reloads are a pretty varied bunch of casings. I don't think that they are nearly as uniform as genuine factory loads or even my own reloads, and some of the failures may have been due to this ammo.

I hope this helps anyone who is looking at the TCP to make a decision as to buy one or not. I didn't expect it to run flawlessly right out of the box, especially with a couple of hundred rounds of GA ammo.
Just remember shot placement is much more important with what you shoot than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Last night I made a couple hundred of my own ammo for the TCP, went out today to see how it would shoot with my own loads. It was much better than the GA factory reloads.

I had done a little bit of polishing on it earlier this week to smooth out the sticking spots on the feed ramp. My loads were with Magtech 95 gr fmj, half of them were with 2.3 gr of 700x and half were with 2.5 gr of 700x. Both worked equally well.

I then ran some Rem. 102 gr. Golden Sabers through it, and they ran fine as well. I think with a bit more range time with the gun without any troubles I will be able to call this one good.

I guess I am one of the luckiest Taurus owners there are, 3 of them now and no real issues with any of them. The TCP having a few feed or extraction issues at first, the PT111 and 24/7 Pro DS having zero issues at all.

That is some great information. Very comprehensive. Thanks!

I have a TCP. It started off rocky. I had as many or more issues than you. It didn't get better after 500 rounds.
I sent it to Taurus. They replaced the slide and when I took it out again, and it's run 800 rounds of Monarch and Hornady SD rounds (about 100 were the Hornady), it's been flawless.
When I shoot WWB, I get a FTE about every 10 rounds!
I have 400 rounds of WWB if anyone wants to buy it. My TCP just doesn't like it. Remington, Monarch, and any nice SD load works great though.

If your gun doesn't soon get "carry reliable" I'd send to Taurus.

I have one and have no problems with it. It is a fairly accurate little gun. It is not my primary carry, but I trust it enough to carry when I have light clothing on that prevents me from carrying a full sized gun.

It seems that half of the people I know have a good experience and the other half don't. Looks like Taurus has some QC issues with their assembly...

No doubt about that! Get on their forums and compare to Glock or Sig.
Yes, all guns have issues, but Taurus is way higher percentage.

The good news though: Taurus customer service is great. They took my TCP and fixed it all up to be a solid little gun. It wasn't out of the box though.
The downside is, the ammo money I spent making sure it was carry-worthy has me wondering if I should have spent the money on a more expensive pocket gun from Sig or Kahr.

My primary carry is a Glock 22. I love it and it is reliable.

I want to get a 1911 next year to compare and see if I like them better.

Nice choice!!

Glock 32, 26, or 19 is always with me. I have only carried the TCP a couple of times... Cycling is one as well as the gym.
Other than that, I think to myself, why wouldn't I carry one of the Glocks?
They're not that hard to conceal even with 'summer clothing'. If, God forbid, I need to use a weapon to defend myself, I don't want to be wishing I had the weapon I'm most effective with!

I carry because there is a very slim chance I'll need to defend myself or my family.
If that slim chance hits... why gamble on what I'm carrying?

The TCP, IMO, is purely a last-option carry gun.
But for that, it's great. :)
