I caught part of it the other day. The piece seems to suggest that, due to a design flaw, there have been accidental discharge problems with the 700 since its inception. Are there any gunsmiths out there who would like to comment? I've wanted a 700 for some time, but if there is a known mechanical defect, I might reconsider.

IANAG nor am I a lawyer...but I do have 5 of them in various calibers and have owned 1 or more ever since about 1966-67. They are my absolute favorite shooters in whatever caliber. I carry one of them with me daily in my truck. I've carried them all over western Canada, Northern Alaska and Western Lower 48 hunting. They all say loaded all the time except when I'm cleaning and I have never had an AD on any one of them ever. That includes carrying over the shoulder, on horseback, and in my truck. Not saying there haven't been AD's for others, but in many many hours of owning, shooting, carrying, and handling I've never had even one AD and as I said they are my favorite shooters of all my rifles. That's my experience covering some 44 or so years dealing with them but as they say...YMMV.

I've never experienced a problem with my 700 VSF that wasn't my own darn fault. They're running with this story based on the typical MSM ignorance of firearms. I wouldn't really pay this much mind. They're just trying to get another gun banned.

Listen carefully to what is said in the video above from Remington. The experts there are saying the same thing numerous ones of us said the first time this idiocy was aired in the previous post referenced above. We should never believe that we are getting the whole truth from the media - on almost ANY issue. There is too much money at stake for honesty and truth to prevail.

Thanks for posting that video. I actually got duped by CNBC for a day or two until I really started to think it through. Then I took my 700 out on a safe range and tried to make it accidentally discharge the exact way they say a 700 accidentally discharges. I could not make it discharge, the only way my 700 will fire is with safety off and trigger pulled.

It really stinks we live in a world that has a media that is so dishonest and so agenda driven.

There's nothing wrong with the Model 700. The only weapon NBC was able to show misfiring was a police sniper rifle. Guess what snipers do to make their ifles more accurate - they mess around with the triggers. I can make *any* of my guns unsafe by over-adjusting the trigger, and none of them are Remmington 700s. The NBC report was just another news agency either trying to make news where no news to be found, or not properly and thoroughly researching a story before presenting its findings to the public. End of story.

If anything, I would predict a RISE in sales of Remington Model 700s...the MSM never gets it. If I were Remington, of course I would politely, and with the proper technical information, refute them...and let the firearm buying public decide. And right now, I'd bet that the public trusts Remington Arms a lot more than the MSM.

I first heard about this issue with the 700 back about 5-6 years ago. It doesn't surface much but it isn't unknown, either. Some hard duty users in extreme environments have reported that the safety can cease to function properly when enough dirt/dust finds its way into the mechanism. A user who doesn't expose his weapon to wind and dust for extended periods isn't likely to encounter it.

I recently inherited my Grandad's Remington 721, made in 1954. The 721 was the predecessor to the 700 and uses the same action. Grandad's rifle was always taken care of, but the scars and scratches on the stock attest to the fact that it was by no means babied and saw over 50 years of serious hunting in the Pacific Northwest. This rifle has NEVER experienced and unintended discharge. Fear sells, and the news networks take full advantage of that fact time and again.
