Sam Houston National Forest Carry?

Ok... as I've understood it Federal owned lands are off-limits to handgun carry. Unless I'm mistaken (which is entirely possible) that would include the Sam Houston National Forest. I was looking on the National Forests & Grasslands website (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/texas/faq/index.shtml#firearms) to confirm that, and I found this:

Notice: Any prohibited acts and other public hunting regulations do not in any way restrict a person having a concealed handgun license from possessing a concealed handgun, loaded or unloaded, on public hunting lands in strict accordance with the concealed handgun laws.

So it seems according to this that with my CHL I am allowed to carry while hunting in the SHNF area.

Any of you well-versed in the laws care to chime in and tell me if I'm right? Can I carry in the SHNF or not? Are all Federal properties off-limits, or am I mistaken there too?

USE AND POSSESSION OF FIREARMS IN NATIONAL PARKS AND FORESTS

Code of Federal Regulations Title 36 "Parks, Forests, Public Property"

NOTE: The National Parks are administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The National Forests are administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Generally, firearms are prohibited in National Parks but permitted in National Forests.

Firearms being transported through a Park must be rendered "inoperable": unloaded, cased, broken down (if possible) and out of sight. The ranger or gate attendant must be notified of the presence of firearms upon entering the Park.

Firearms and hunting are permitted in National Forests in accordance with state law. Firearms are prohibited in any National Forest designated a game refuge or wildlife preserve except where authorized by the Forest Service.Violation of state firearms laws is prohibited in all National Forests.

Regulations concerning firearms in National parks and Forests may be found in Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

Some like George Washington National Forest actually have shooting ranges. This however is in WV and not TX.

Many National Forests in the east have shooting ranges. I shoot at one of the ones in George Washington National Forest when I'm visiting my parents in Virginia. It's about a 45 minute drive, but it is worth it for a free, well maintained outdoor range in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
