Homeowner Shoots Intruder
An overnight burglary attempt in Longview ends with one of the alleged intruders shot to death by the homeowner. Police say three other juvenile suspects, who broke into the property, are in custody.
Sheriffs deputies say the burglary happened in north Longview shortly after 2:00 a.m. The home is located in the 200 block of West Pliler Precise Rd.
Investigators say burglars were confronted by the 65-year-old homeowner when they entered the residence. The owner fired several shots, and the suspects fled the property.
Bradley Parrish, 19, of Longview was shot, and found dead a short time later. Parrish had apparently collapsed while crossing the road about 200 yards away from the home. Deputies caught the other three juveniles, two boys and a girl, within minutes of arriving at the scene.
The news of the shooting has shocked and unnerved neighbors, who had no idea what had happened. "It's definitely unnerving, but my feelings on it are you don't need to be there if it's not your home," said Deanna McAdams.
The juveniles have been charged with burglary of a habitat. They are in juvenile detention. An autopsy has been ordered in the case. The evidence has been handed over to the District Attorney's office, to go before a grand jury.

I hope the homeowner doesn't have to deal with any civil charges. I imagine it's very unnerving to have your home invaded during the night, but to have to deal with civil charges would add insult to injury.
Unfortunately, a large segment of our society believes that you should never, under any circumstances, shoot a minor.

Greetings--
This happened a few miles N of us. I'll keep an eye on the local paper (Longview News-Journal) and post any significant updates should they occur.
There was an article in today's paper (also online)- no new info. The article was about a recent similar burglary-related shooting here and how their family was dealing with it.

Well...As cold and crase as this is going to sound...
I think its going to take quite a few of these types of incidences to inundate the psychy of our yutes and other folks with criminal intent to realize that B & E is not a very healthy thing...
The odds should be against them, and the law needs to protect homeowners implictly from civil lawsuits that have become somewhat the norm for people who choose to defend themselves...
Is personal property worth a life??? I don't think so, but the burn should be put on the people considering this illegal activity...You may not make it...Simple as that...
enough is enough...

I don't know that the man was necessarily protecting his property. When someone breaks into your home in the night, you should assume that the person is after your life. And it isn't like you can ask them and get an honest answer; we're dealing with thugs here.

With the law in Texas as it is, and the high level of firearms ownership, burglary of a habitation ranks right up there with Russian roulette as a Very Stupid Thing. One of these self-defense incidents occurs nearly every week.stevie_d_64 wrote:I think its going to take quite a few of these types of incidences to inundate the psychy of our yutes and other folks with criminal intent to realize that B & E is not a very healthy thing...
Unfortunately, our "yutes" do not read the newspapers or watch TV news, nor listen to their elders.

With 4 people breaking into an occupied house at 2AM, I'd bet they were planning on more than just stealing.

I think the question is, "are you willing to take the life of someone who is ONLY taking your stuff?" I, for one, am not.Odin wrote:That's not a question that we can answer because we aren't criminals.stevie_d_64 wrote:Is personal property worth a life???
That is a question that only a criminal can ask himself..."is this person's personal property worth my life?"

txinvestigator, we can't determine that.
The homeowner probably couldn't either.
When someone breaks into your home, they aren't there for iced tea.
If someone broke into my home, I would feel as if my life were in jeopardy and shoot.
