Instrutor class location

Post by bnadeau527 »

Good morning fellow CHL holders. Do I have to travel to the DPS in Austin to take the CHL instructor course? I already have my CHL that I took years ago locally in the Hood county area. Sure would be nice not having to spend the extra money on food and lodging.

Yes, for new first-time instructors I believe the week-long, in-person class is still required (someone will be along to correct me if I have this wrong). The class last time was switched to the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, a HUGE improvement over the old location at a hotel in north central Austin that included car burglaries with the price of admission.

The class - while long - is well done by the DPS troopers who run it. You'll learn some new things.

Plus its almost worth all the trouble just get to shoot 100 rounds at the DPS training facility .... 75-lane pistol shooting bay with pneumatically operated target stands (target is turned away from you, then when you hear the "two seconds to fire X rounds" command, the target spins 90 degrees to face for exactly the two seconds while you get off your rounds, then turns away again. Of course, would be even cooler if they let us use their "shoot house" or drive on the test track

The CHL-16 is a good reference to start with.
