Shipping a gun from a relative VA to TX

Most FFL's in Texas are only charging 20 bucks or so and they can ship cheaper than you, so you end up spending about the same money. Look at the topics and you will find a thread of FFL's on this forum who can help you out.

You are correct. The post office will not let a non-FFL ship a handgun and I have gotten into such a habit of shipping handguns through an FFL that I confused the issue. Shipping a handgun by other carriers always seemed to be more expensive than just paying an FFL to ship through the post office. Rifles, on the other hand, can be shipped by a non-FFL through the post office. Thank you for clearing that up.

Yep. Last gun I shipped for warranty repair was $63. Fedex required it to be shipped priority overnite. Of course I told them it was a gun. If you choose to say it is parts then it will cost you less than $20. But I like to sleep good at night so I do my best to abide by the policies of whatever entity I am dealing with at the time.

I have shipped a few times and it is cheaper to go through a FFL as they get to use USPS.

It is actually against Federal law to claim it as parts, as the law states that you must follow the policies of the carrier you use, and both Fedex and UPS require firearms to be declared and shipped via a hub and as stated overnight for FedEx(not sure for UPS overnight).

Another issue is that if there is a shipping problem such as insurance/lost you are going to be SOL if you tried to ship it as parts. now maybe a HIPoint might be worth the try but my Wilson isn't. Lol.

Ill never understand that attitude that some FFLs seem to have. Not only are they losing a customer they are also telling you to break the law.

Now next time you're thinking of purchasing a firearm or anything else related, you'll remember that they wouldn't give you service, because they didn't want to be hassled with your low profit transaction.

Some of the gun shops act as if any firearm sell that is not at a gun shop is a threat to their business. Maybe others feel the effort involved is not worth what most folks are willing to pay. I would recommend you look in the FFL Topic for an FFL that will assist you. There are several listed.


I am stunned they advised you to play dumb and ship by FEDX. I thought about that option one time and decided I would have a serious problem if the package turned up missing and I wanted to file an insurance claim with them. I always insure firearms when shipping them.
