2 guns or 3....

Post by shawdow45 »

As a Texas Certified CHL Instucter for the past 15 years, I always recomend the Glock 19 for 1st time CHL License holders or people with a carry permit. Why??? Because it's simple, light, conceals well, AND It Works Every Time!!! And even tho my favorite CHL gun is a officers size 1911 in .45 acp, I frequently carry a Glock 31 (357 sig) & a Glock 33 compact as a Back-up because the mags will interchange. I prefere the .357sig caliber because it has much more stopping power than a 9mm, but it also has quite a bit more recoil. And I have also found I can Conceal a full size Glock as easy as the compact frame. I prefer a Galco M5X Matrix Paddle Holster holster or the Galco Concealable Belt Holster. Also, with the hot weather here in Texas, I often carry what the Texas Rangers always called "Mexican Style". That is just tucked inside the pants on the right hip with the butt of the gun turned forward. I can not do that with my 1911, because of too many sharp edges, & the sweat will rust your gun. I prefer the Glock when I carry in this manner because it's much more comfortable than the 1911, & U don't have to ever worry about rust w/ a Glock. AND, I Have Had even my Best 1911 jam before. BUT I have never had any of my Glock's Jam! Ever!!!

So yes, I always carry 2 guns & sometimes 3.

If I have to call the Cops @ my ranch, they are 1 hour away. Carrying 3 guns may seem extreme to a lot of people, but like I tell my CHL students... It's Much Better to have them & not Need them, then the alternative. Because the 1 time U leave your Gun @ home. That's the 1 time U WILL need it!!! I Pray I Never have to use my Carry Gun, but they R with me always. I can protect my family at all times against all bad guys. BTW, I usually carrry a Ruger LCP 380 w/ the Crimson Trace Lazer as my 3rd Pistol. Not my favorite Caliber for Self Defense, but it is Very Reliable, & beats a Knife Any Day! All my Texas State Trooper friends carry 1 in their week-side pocket. That way, if some one is trying to take away their Duty Weapon, the can reach in their left pocket & use the LCP .380 to get the Bad Guy whom they are fighting with off of them! So don't let anyone make fun of U for carrying 2 or 3 guns. Every Law Officer I know does. Better to be over prepared than un-armed or have a malfunction. That's not Paranoia, it's just being prepaired like the Boy Scout Motto. Also as a alternative 2nd or 3rd gun, I highly recomend the new Ruger LC9. Mine is very accurate & reliable! And the recoil is much less than a .38 snubnose. NR

First, welcome to the forum,

I do not know where you live, but here in Collin County, greater Mckinney Area, it super boring, i.e. super safe. Carrying my sc in the day or compact/laser/light at night is more than enough. However, I do carry enough Ammo, at least 31 rds or 46rds.

On the other hand, I understand that LEOs are facing BGs daily and many suspects are violents, so 1, or 2 guns, plus full Auto rifle and a lead blaster is understandable.

Welcome to the forum. Can I give you a few suggestions?

1. White space makes it easier to read, especially on a web page

2. I don't think you can advertise until you have been here a while.

3. Multiple guns are even better if they can share ammo and mags.

It's super safe here in West Texas where I live, also, but since I work in the Prison System, I see a lot of my former "Clients" who are now out on parole. I totally agree on the extra ammo. U can Never have too much. I just find it's faster to draw another handgun instead of reloading. On the Rifle Issue, I have to agree that a Pistol is not the best defense gun.... Nothing beats a good AR15, 12 gauge Pump, or a Tactical or "Sniper Rifle". Like one of my buddies who was a US Marine Recon Vietnam Vet always said... " A Pistol is Only for getting the Enemy off of U while U Reload or get your hands on your Rifle. He Preferred a M-14 to the AR15, while I tend to favor the AR15 or a M1 Garrand, or as Patton called it, " The Greatest Battle Rifle Ever Built.

...no ad there in the OP...just a mention of his experience...
...I like that you teach the LEOS to carry their last chance backup in a weak-hand pocket...makes a lotta sense...

I usually (always, except 1 part of 1 day a month, when in a courthouse for 10 minutes) carry 2 guns, and every other Sunday 3 or 4 guns to church. I carry 3 spare 20 round mags, in case one fails. When I go kayaking, I carry either a snubby .38 somewhere, or Taurus PT-709 slim with snakeshot too in the life vest.

Soon-to-be Primary =
XD45 (as soon as new barrel arrives and front sight replaced with the ATS front sight, Advantage Tactical sight already installed as rear sight)

Current Primary = Glock 26, with extended barrel, and 20 round mag with grip/mag spacer. (Glock 17 mag with Pearce PG-39 base plate [+3]) and internal laser and Advantage TACTICAL Sights..

BUG = LW Seecamp carried front strong side pocket (I have no left hand)

Belt = Comptac belt with Velcro sewn in

Most used holster = Tuck This 2, with Velcro added on top of the J clip which goes under belt

Position = 3:00 ... slight cant such that the PG-39 baseplate on spare mag on holster carrier rests just above belt.

2 spare mags in week side pocket (I have no left hand)

(Yes, I have lots of other more expensive holsters and several with V-clips, but this at 3:00 is just plain comfortable and easily conceals ... none of the Police officers I spoke to about guns at the Bluebonnet festival in Burnet today could spot anything.... my niece was getting annoyed at me talking to every officer I saw, but she put up with it so I'd buy her some new sunglasses  )

I took my SIL to GT Dist in Austin to buy him a Glock 22 (he's a poor Paramedic/Firefighter) and while we were waiting I saw a young man buying a Ruger LCP. I assumed it was for his wife, but he produced a DPS document (it was like a diploma) to get the discount. I struck up a brief conversation and he said he was a recent DPS graduate. Now I wonder if it was for his own use. Makes sense it would be if other troopers are carrying them as back-up.

I have tried three a few times:
G22 IWB @ 2:30
Springfield XD sub compact IWB @ 7:00
LCP in pocket.

It was too much, and distracting.
I think two is the MAX for me. One with a mag is pretty good IMHO.
It is all preference. I think each carrier should do a cost-benefit when deciding on 2 and up.

If a BG is on me and trying to take my primary handgun, I think a knife in my support hand will be more effective than throwing another gun into the dogpile. However, I realize that every situation is unique.

In cargo shorts i carry 3. When sitting in vehicle primary and secondary are not easy accesible. But one in lower cargo pocket is easy to grab if someone trys to get you while buckled up . Might not ever need it but I dont want to be in situation where i dont have it if i do

1. Welcome to the forum.

2. Not even Glocks are perfect. My wife's Glock 19 has jammed before...only a couple of times, but it has jammed. There is no such thing as a semiauto pistol that will NEVER jam. There are only pistols which jam with less frequency than other pistols. The good news is that her G19 doesn't jam any more frequently than my Kimber Ultra—a 1911 which runs flawlessly.

3. If you're concerned about your remote location and the distance of LEOs if you need them, why not carry 1 pistol, and throw an AR15 with a few extra 30 round magazines in the car? If you're at that much risk of being in a firefight, then a reliable long gun would be a better choice.

If you can carry 3 guns and it does not bother you, I say go for it. For me, I have experimented with various bugs and I have not been able to train myself to carry them with any consistency. I hate to say it, but 95% of the time, I only carry one full size pistol and three spare magazines. That being said, I always have both an AR and a 12 gauge in my truck. They are secured and access is not immediate, as I don't want them stolen, but my pistol is planned to be a retreat tool. Retreat to the truck or to the house where I can get behind cover and access a carbine. I don't discourage you from carrying 3 guns, but as TAM noted, a carbine in your truck gives you a lot more options, especially if you find yourself in situation where you might be forced to act offensively rather than just defensively.
