Appleseed Project

Post by Medic624 »

Anyone ever attend an Appleseed Project?

I'm thinking about taking my daughter so she can learn some History and how to shoot the "right" way...

She told me today she'd like to learn to shoot competitively ... I can shoot pretty darn well but ..... :fire

Yes, I've gone twice. Very worth it to learn basic marksmanship.

I've found it helps to have a 10/22 or similar magazine fed .22, scope helps alot. The class is very fast paced, and you put alot of rounds downrange in a short amount of time. You'll be surprised how fast you improve in one weekend if you pay attention.

Meet some nice people too!

Yeah that's what I'm looking for...
My daughter is sporting a scoped 14 round tube fed Marlin 60... Maybe I will go get myself a .22 so I'm not dropping 500 rounds of 5.56 downrange. Ha ha

While the Marlin may be very accurate, she may run into some problems using a tube fed weapon. The course of fire is laid out based on a service rifle with a magazine. For example, you will have 3 targets to shoot, and you will fire 2 rounds into the first, 1 into the second, RELOAD, then 4 rounds into the third. All stages are timed, and it goes very quick. If your rifle or magazine malfunctions, you lose points for hits on the target (or shooting the wrong target too many times etc.) If she's very well practiced, she may be able to lay out her rounds on the shooting mat for the course of fire, and slam them in, but it's an extra step everyone else isn't doing.

Most AR's do fine, some with .22 conversions. A lot of issues with improperly maintained weapons, or shooters unfamiliar with their weapons. The 1st time I went it was extremely high wind, blowing a virtual sandstorm across the line, gumming up a lot of weapons. Be prepared for any sort of weather/condition as the shooting doesn't stop for anything (except maybe lightning or tornadoes. Maybe. )

Anyhow, hope it's not too much to read. ;-) You and your daughter will enjoy it alot and it is a great family event.
