Considering 1st 1911 - Springfield Loaded Champion SS

Post by KahrGuy »

I'm considering a Springfield Loaded Champion SS as my 1st 1911, but am concerned with the weight (37oz empty)! Another 1911 I've been keeping my eye on is the Kimber Super Carry Pro HD - but this version is also heavy at 35oz. Is there substantial reason to rethink these and look for lightweight models? The Springfield lightweight champion model isn't Stainless, so thinking the weight gain may be worth it over time.

Just not sure if it's time for me to consider 1911 or purchase another poly pistol. I'm equally concerned that I may want an Ultra size rather than Pro/Champion size. It will be a 6mo estimated wait for the Loaded Champion from the day I order, so am eager to initiate order!

Crazy question but are there some who regret dropping $800 on the 1911 model (in general)?

Full-sized steel-framed 1911s run about 36-41 ounces with an empty mag.
You can save weight with an aluminum frame. You won't be giving up anything unless you're talking about extreme longevity. Inside 10,000 rounds it won't matter, and few people will ever shoot their pistol that much.
The heavier gun is harder to carry but it's easier to shoot. More mass means less perceived recoil. That may get you back on target quicker for faster follow-up shots.
My Kimber has a 3" barrel and an aluminum frame. It only weighs 25 ounces with an empty mag. Very nice for carry. But for shooting, there's definitely a noticeable difference between that and a 5" steel gun coming in at around 39 ounces.

Never regret paying anything for a fine 1911. Any 1911 says something about you, or at least I think. There's a reason why it's been here for 100 years and counting. There are cheaper 1911's out there though, so you don't have to jump right in for the most expensive. RIA's start off in their 400's. Let us know what you get. I'll keep an eye out on this post. :bigear:

I own one. For the $$s it is the best 1911 I have ever owned right out of the box.

Not for sale at any price that someone would offer along w/ about 3 others I have.

I have a full-size loaded black stainless combat and really love it. Great shooting gun and very well made. Would not hesitate to get another Springfield of any type.

Additionally, their service department is second to none on support IMO. :thumbs2:

Cant go wrong with either. Own a Kimber Eclipse in 10mm that I carry daily no issues. It looks just like the Springfield (black stainless). I also carry a Kimber CDP Pro wich has the aluminum frame and is 4 inch barrel instaed of 5 on the Eclipse.

The weight difference is there but not to the point were its a major issue.

I hate to say this, but looks like I may be getting a Kahr P9 instead of Springfield 1911 for @ $200 cheaper. The wait for the Loaded Champion is said to be 6+ months AND they are requiring me to pay in full (not just hold on credit card) up front! Kimber options are even worse at 10+ months.

I'm OK with waiting the 6 months and giving credit card info for a security hold, but do not want to pay @$788+tax over 6 months early and not even have a solid date as to when Springer would be in for pickup!

Even worse yet (as I'm heading for cover), I already have a Kahr PM9. Granted, I absolutely love this piece and shoot it very well for the size & weight it is - part of the reason I know I'd be happy with P9 as well!

How many of you would recommend to wait out the 6+ months and prepare for paying dearly and in advance for a gem like this? Is it worth the pain and suffering like an initiation to the elite 1911 club?! I do not want to purchase one without at least the features of the Loaded line, but also do not want to pay much more than $1K! I'm fine with an extended wait period, but is it the norm to pay in full up front several months ahead of time?!

1. You'll probably end up buying the 1911 eventually anyway.
2. I would venture to guess that if you looked around you could find another vendor that won't charge you the full price until they get the gun in stock, or a vendor that has one in stock.

Well, I managed to find a Springfield 1911 Lightweight Operator Champion which I REALLY think is near perfect for me - only not stainless! It's lighter, has light rail, has match grade barrel, and is IN STOCK (luckily) as original person who ordered never picked up! :hurry:

Question: Should I be concerned that it isn't stainless? Is this Operator model even better than the Loaded model? Would anyone shy away from this model for some reason?

I may pick up within next day or two - it's securely held for me!

No it doesn't matter if it's a stainless it will still hold up just fine. Springfield operators are not necessarily better than the loaded, essentially they are loaded models with a rail on them. I think you should go for it I have 2 Springfield TRPs and I love them over my kimbers and other 1911 save the wilsons. Go for it and never look back! Welcome to the 1911 club! :cheers2:

I'm happy to report that I've joined the highly respectful 1911 club! Picked up my new Springfield Lightweight Champion Operator today :coolgleamA: Very excited to break her in, but it may be a couple weeks before I get to the range. I'll post some pics in next couple days, but searching forum for "lightweight champion" will quickly bring up some great pics of other members. Mine will remain stock for quite a while, but I can see myself replacing black guide rod with stainless for consistent blend with barrel.

Thanks to all for comments & encouragement! I'm so happy I went this route vs. picking up a rather redundant Kahr P9 (since I have PM9 already). :cheers2:

Question: For Springfield Lightweight Champion Operator, is it considered to have a half rail or full rail? I imagine a half rail. I'm wanting to purchase an MTAC holster and what appears closest to what I need is the fit for TRP Operator w/half rail. If anyone has experience or knowledge on exactly which MTAC properly fits my new friend, please fill me in when you can!

I have both an MTAC and Crossbreed Mini-Tuck for my other weapons and find the MTAC a bit more comfortable. However, theses weapons are much lighter than this 1911. So it may be that heavier CCW's ride more comfortably in Crossbreed than MTAC - not sure... Crossbreed has specific model listed so there's no question they would have a holster specific to my Champion Operator w/rails.

I still have my work cutout for me with breaking operator in so not planning to carry this one for at least a month or two. However, I'd still like to pick up good, deep concealment holster soon.
