MO: Man sues security guard and SIG Sauer for shooting
In the St. Louis, Missouri, area April 27 a man who was accidentally shot filed a lawsuit against SIG Sauer and a security guard who supposedly dropped his pistol. The lawsuit claims that the pistol could discharge when dropped, with no one pulling the trigger.

In an unrelated incident, a school police officer was "supposedly" cleaning a SIG pistol in school when the weapon "accidentally" discharged and caused quite a fuss.

Ironically, Missouri is called the "show-me state" because the inhabitants have a reputation for being skeptical. I can't see a SIG P-series pistol "going off" without a significant amount of mental flatulence involved.

Also unrelated, but:
I understand and uncover officer of Dallas PD shot his pistol off today. The bullet went through two walls and landed in a locker. No one was injured.

I'd take such suits a lot more seriously if they'd go after Deringer first. Their guns don't even have trigger guards. Well, the ones I've seen don't. I can't claim to be familiar with their entire product line.seamusTX wrote:In the St. Louis, Missouri, area April 27 a man who was accidentally shot filed a lawsuit against SIG Sauer and a security guard who supposedly dropped his pistol. I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

Do you happen to know what they carry for duty use? (if issued)

I do not know. I have searched the internet and cannot find a link. It was on NBC 5 Dallas night.Grog wrote:carlson1 wrote:Also unrelated, but:

I've run into several DPD at GT Dist and I always look at their radios first. I actually had a conversation with two over how they worked (old analog Saber IIs, they said they are older than some on the department

I have a friend on DPD. He carries a Glock.Grog wrote:carlson1 wrote:Also unrelated, but:

Chicago cops still carry revolvers. Some of the revolvers look older than the cops carrying them.
I'm sure some of the units that deal with the hard-core criminal element carry more firepower, but I saw cops with revolvers the last time I was at Midway Airport.

I think most departments allow you to keep carrying whatever you were issued when you went through the academy no matter what they switch to later, and it's more likely to be older officers working plum assignments like airports. I know I've seen HPD officers working Astros games carrying revolvers.seamusTX wrote:Chicago cops still carry revolvers. Some of the revolvers look older than the cops carrying them.

Agreed. Lots of Dallas cops also carry Sigs.

SIGs are one of the most widely deployed sidearms outside the former communist bloc. No pattern of trouble in this regard has been detected. I doubt the plaintiff will be able to find any expert to testify that the design or manufacture is defective.

A derringer is probably the safest pistol out there. The firing pins are recessed unless the hammer is cocked. It is single action only so no trigger guard is needed (if not cocked). When it is cocked mine is about a 12lb pull. The hammer requires the strength of Thor to pull back so that isn't an issue either. What is unsafe about it? It can be thrown to the ground on the hammer but there is no pin to hit for an AD. The firing pins are on a rocker so no inertia type strikes like a 1911. FYI, all this is from my experience with my 2 Cobra .38 derringers. I do not know about others but they seem to all be the same setup.Dave2 wrote:I'd take such suits a lot more seriously if they'd go after Deringer first. Their guns don't even have trigger guards. Modern pistols like the SIG don't just "go off". It's probably like the supposed "sudden acceleration" of Audis (in the '80's) and Toyotas in the 2010's. In computer work we have a special term for certain errors, PEBKAC pronounced (PEB-kak). It stands for Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair...
Reminds me of a couple apocryphal stories from my "youth"... A bum (aka homeless victim of our harsh capitalist society, hereafter "Bum A") is arguing with his buddy (hereafter "Bum B"), over a jug of wine, and who had more than his fair share. Bum A shoots Bum B, killing him. When the police arrive, Bum A claims he was defending himself and during a struggle, he dropped his .38 REVOLVER and it went off, 5 TIMES, thereby explaining Bum B's four gunshot wounds and another shot in the ground.
Husband A claims he was in the kitchen doing dishes. Wife B began arguing with him over his washing skills. According to Husband A, she rushed him while he was holding a kitchen knife (to wash) and impaled herself on it...9 times.
