Why so many guns?

I'm sure this is an old one, but I saw it for the first time today when it was sent to me by my son.

A Texas State Trooper pulled over a pickup truck for a faulty taillight.

When the Trooper requested ID and insurance, the driver, sitting there with his hands at 10 and 2, removed his wallet from his back pocket after getting permission from the officer to do so, and handed the officer his driver's license, insurance card and CHL

The officer took all the documents, looked them over and said, "Mr. Smith, I see you have a CHL. Do you have any weapons with you?"

" Yes sir," the driver replied, "I have a .357 revolver in an IWB holster at 3:00 o'clock, a .45 M1911 in the glove box, and a .22 derringer in my boot."

The officer looked at the driver and asked, "anything else?"

"Yes sir, I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge and an AR-15 behind the seat."

The officer asked if the man was driving to or from a shooting range and the man said he wasn't, so the officer bent over and looked into the driver's face and said "Mr. Smith, you're carrying quite a few guns - May I ask what you are afraid of?"

Mr. Smith locked eyes with the officer and calmly answered, "Not a doggone thing, officer!"

Yep, been on here a few times. It never gets old. This must of been an off day for Mr. Smith I hard that he had many more in his arsenal.

I’ve mentioned this in the past, but back when I was frequently attending training classes, it wasn’t uncommon for me to be driving around the state (a couple of times across state lines to Arizona) a few times each year and fully equipped for the class.

Thing is, I’m sort of a Boy Scout about things, and pretty much resemble Clint Smith’s remark that two is one, and one is none. I always take at least one extra gun of the type needed, sometimes two extra; and I take double the recommended amount of ammo. You waste a lot of time and money if you drive to a course only to have mechanical failures that can’t be fixed in the field. You don’t get as much out of being a spectator only.

Now, that isn’t too bad when heading out to a handgun-only course, but I was always careful to drive very cautiously when going to a multi-gun course. The above joke was always on my mind because it didn’t seem too farfetched.

Two particular courses required a primary handgun, a BUG, a carbine, and a shotgun. So I as I happily putted down the highway I had my truck gun (stays locked under the driver’s seat, just in case), three primary handguns (one on my hip), all in .40 S&W; two BUGs (one in my pocket), one in .40 S&W and one in 9mm; two AR-15s; and two shotguns, both 12-gauge. I had 4,000 rounds of .40 S&W, 500 rounds of 9mm, 3,000 rounds of .223, 400 rounds of double-ought buckshot, 100 12-gauge slugs, and 200 rounds of #7 shot in case I might need it to shoot steel.

Lesee... Six handguns, two rifles, two shotguns, and over 8,000 rounds of ammo. And I’m in the SUV by myself.

So, yeah. I really did wonder, if pulled over, precisely how it might go:

• “Do you have any weapons with you?”
  “Yes, officer. I do.”
  “Where is it located?”
  “Uh, I have more than one firearm.”
  “What do you have, and where are they?”

Then what?

• “Well, see, the thing is, I heard news of a zombie attack in West Texas, and...”

Oh, they went into the hotel with me. After all, gotta do some cleaning each night after the range work. Those pushcarts are the bees' knees.

Most of the out-of-town students stay in the same hotel, usually recommended by the instructor. Ya get 20 or more of us showing up like that and, well, it's a pretty well-armed hotel for several days.

Now that you mention it, I wonder what would happen if a DPS trooper stopped more than one vehicle on the way to the same class?

...prolly not many muggings on the parking lot, either...my dept. provided NO training past the academy...very occasional qualifying on the local range...there was no swat team...my, how times have changed...
