Well drat

Post by jmorris »

I feared this day was coming. When Brooks AFB converted to Brooks City-Base the AF leased the buildings but did >not< lease the parking lots so there was no problem leaving my firearm in the truck. Then some months ago we moved to a leased building* just outside the wire at Lackland, with Lackland handling all services. The building remodeling is almost complete, and the parking lot is done. I was hoping that it was the same deal as at Brooks, even though the building and parking areas are all enclosed in one fenced area. Originally we heard that Port San Antonio would be providing civilian guards so that looked like a win. Then Monday I noticed that AF installation signs had gone up on the fence and today we got an email stating that as of 1 July the gate would be active, AF Security Forces personnel would be manning the gates, and bullet 11: "No firearms permitted within the compound".

Drat. No more carrying for me M-F.

Just a minor rant.

*Funny thing, this BRAC's purpose was to get DoD assets OUT of leased buildings and behind the wire. Well, at least now there's 8 or 10 organizations in one building instead of a bunch of buildings so I guess it looks like an improvement.

Two words... spot search.

Access to military bases ain't the same as it used to be in this post-9/11 world.

Sometimes with dogs. And on occasion they've been known to run the dogs through the parking lots. Now I'm likely to get a hit anyway. The range I go to you can back your vehicle right up to the firing line so who knows if there could be enough residue lingering on it for the dogs. My range bag is in there half the time (I'll have to remember to remove ammo), probably one or two shell casings in it. Heck, probably a couple (three, four, dozen) in the bed of the truck.

To make things worse, one of the big dogs (maybe the big dog) of security is going to be moving into our building. They are going to have their own armed security in their area of the building. So things will be really tight after that.

Had an idea. Outside of military bases a drive through storage facility for people to store their handguns while on base. Per time or monthly fee. Knowing some commanders it'd be put off limits.
