Happy Father's Day!

Post by WildBill »

I know Father's Day isn't until tomorrow, but I wanted to start this thread and share a picture. It's the only picture that I have of my dad shooting. The photograph was taken by my mom in El Paso, Texas around 1951. My dad bought this Colt Officer's Model .38 Special from a gas station for $35. I still have the gun and the receipt.

Wonderful photo. The gun along with the receipt and picture make a real treasure.

Happy Father's Day everyone, but according to my coffee mug, I'm the #1 dad. Better luck next year.

I hate to break it to you, but they sell those mugs at WalMart and anyone can buy one.

After looking at the photo, I think I also still have the holster. The belt is gone, but I still have the sterling silver buckle that he bought in Mexico.

Bill, that's an awesome photo. I'm envious. Somewhere I have picture of my dad and a nurse standing on the beach in bathing suits on Guam, some time during 1945. It was taken while he was recuperating from being wounded at Iwo. You can see that he's still having trouble standing up straight all the way.

Happy Father's Day! This is the first Father's day I can't call my dad to wish him a Happy Father's Day as he passed away in March. The only picture I have of him with a weapon is from his WWII assignment in Assam India when he shot a tiger with his Garand. I'll post it if I can find it.

WildBill, That's a great picture of your father and it's great that you still have the pistol. What a wonderful memory that must be.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my dad shooting, and honestly there are few pictures of him at all. As a professional photographer he was more comfortable behind the camera than in front. He was very involved in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) in our area as well as ARES (I may have this name wrong) Amatuer Radio Emergency somethingor other I can't remember what it was. But they participated in relaying information during national disasters etc. He would take my oldest daughter to the all nighter drills and they would talk on the HAM radios all around the world. What an awesome experience for all involved. The HAM radio community was an amazing group of folks.

To all the men out there who have a positive impact on children's lives God Bless you REAL big! Happy Father's Day! I personally think MAR is an amazing Father and such a blessing not only to our kids, but all the youth he works with through 4-H etc.

My Dad has been gone 5 years now, and I miss him most on days like this and every time my kids reach a milestone. I am so glad they got to know him even though it was really hard when he went home, they have the memories and lessons from Grandpa!
