Little brother shooting first handgun

Post by Jules »

My little brother (14) asked me about shooting handguns while we were out at the grandparents today. He's shot my 11-87 and he likes to hunt deer with his .270 and really gets a kick out of my ak47, but never has shot a pistol. He asked what I was carrying and if he could shoot it?

Of course, but its my g30 I had on me today. I almost didn't want to start him off with a .45, but I figured I liked it so he should as well right? The answer is yes! He loved it, we went through 20 minutes of proper handling of the gun and how it works and how there is "no safety". He had a little trouble with keeping his finger off the trigger while he was asking me questions, that was quickly fixed. The first 25 rounds or so I couldn't figure out why he was shooting so bad, he's a talented kid and I knew he could do better. He was aiming with his left eye. We got that straightened out and after another 50 rounds I had him shooting old cans of snuff at 8-10 yards.

Im really glad I had the chance to teach him to shoot. There's not a lot of things that we get to do together because of our 9 year age difference. Now he's getting older we have more things like this that we can do. Im very proud of him and really happy I didn't scare him away with such a large caliber. I've now taught him to be efficient with shotgun, rifle and pistol.

Good for you and a great story.

...I've found a .45 is a good first gun...it's gratifying but not brutal...haven't found a new shooter who didn't do well with it...from 8 to early 20s...still some grown men who're skittish about shooting one, though...
