Another Sign

Post by casselthief »

But this one, well, it has other things to go with it.
here's the sign:
Image
"Lifetimes Fitness bans all guns on these premises"

now, I know the obvious answer. "It's not a 30.06, so it doesn't apply to me."
However, this is a gym. with a locker room. now, the easy thing for me to do is to bring my gymbag, as I often do, and leave the ole pistola in there, in the locker, whilst I get my sweat on. and that's what I have done, in the past.
However, again, there's some things that perplex me. There's a day care inside. does that have any bearing?
does the high schoolers there have any bearing?
I'm pretty sure they don't have any "functions" with the schools, but still.
what if I'm packin', and I pull out my gun to put it in the locker. I mean, it's still in it's holster, I just set the whole enchilada in the locker.
can anyone say anything?
I know they have the right to tell me to leave, verbally, without a sign, but still...
you see how this has me slightly feeling iffy?
I certainly don't want to cause a scene, but at the same time, I'm leaving this place at night, and I don't want any bull if I'm heading out to mah truck in the midst of the parking lot. would be a good place for a mugging, just the same (other than the fact that it's in Flower Mound, of all places).
aaaaaaaaaaaaaand, discuss:

sorry about the poor pic quality, took it with mah phone.

Did the "salesman" review the rules verbaly with you when you signed up? I know they let police work out there and i've seen them lock guns in the lockers. I'd ignore that sign and that is all i'm saying ;-)

I would use a different gym and tell them exactly why.

Its obviously not a school, so the kids or high schoolers hold no bearing on the issue. Its not a valid sign that can apply to you, so you can walk right in with a big grin on your face and a "pistola" in your bag.

I lock my carry gun in the car at the gym. That leaves me with my P3AT in my shorts pocket, or sometimes in my fanny pack.

I'd say "leave it in the car" but it'd have nothing to do with their sign.

I've had stuff stolen out of gym lockers before. The last thing i'd want stolen is my gun, so I leave it locked in the car.

(this coming from the guy who threw a fit at the museum mind you! )

EDIT: LA Fitness has no problems with legally carried guns, at least my location in Dallas doesn't.

I'd leave and proceed to the nearest Dairy Queen for a Blizzard.

Well, let's see what goes with it;

Treadmills - around here, we have this stuff called ground. It comes with an extra advantage in that walking on it gets you somewhere.

Heavy stuff - remember that big bag of trash you were supposed to take out two weeks ago?

Excercise bikes - they make another variant of these that works in conjunction with the "ground" thing mentioned above, with the same benefits.

Aerobic classes - pawnshops are full of Richard Simmons videos for less than the cost of the gas to get to the gym. (bonus: you can have a beer while you're watching them at home)

Girls in skimpy outfits - there are lots of newsgroups out there full of girls with skimpier outfits, and let's face it, you have about as much chance of taking one of them home.

Now why do you care about the sign again?

Take it off and put it in your gym bag before you get out of your car, no one in the gym will see it that way. While you’re traveling from the car to the Gym, and when you come back out, you can have your hand on the weapon if you want, or reach in for it if you see something suspicious in the lot. Once back in the car, put it back in your normal carry position on your person.

As nitrogen mentioned, there’s a risk of getting it stolen in the gym, but it seems leaving it in the car is risking theft also. I have no idea which is higher risk…

Do you carry your wallet, car/house keys, and cash into the gym? Do you keep them with you as you make your circuit, or do they stay in the locker? If you carry them around with you, then add the gun to the pile (in a suitable container of course). If you leave them in the locker, then I assume you feel there is minimal risk of theft or you wouldn’t leave your credit cards, home address, access to your car and home, along with a bunch of other important stuff in the locker. Keep the gun wherever you put those other equally important items.

But it seems the only way to avoid the chance of theft in both the car and in the locker is to not carry when you go to the gym, and it sounds like that’s not a viable option in your case (it wouldn’t be for me either).

I neither had a CHL, nor ever thought of it. the recycled used car salesmen that sell the memberships don't know jack about, welll..... jack.
Thanks for the perspective, but they also have a sauna, whirlpool, steam room, cafeteria, basketball court, rock climbing wall, racquetball court... etc
yeah, I think leavin' it in the bag is my option. the lockers lock, and you take your key with you, so I'm not too worried about theft.
thanks, all.

lifetime actually has decent lockers. shoudn't be a problem. thanks for the reminder, i am a memeber in sugar land and need to start going again before all the holiday food takes a liking to hanging out on my waist line. :leaving

I asked about the sales person because ours did review all of the rules verbally when we signed up. Not sure if that would constitute verbal notification or not.

Funny story that happened when we first started going to Lifetime. I had just finished up a workout and was headed to the door, iPod still blasting in my ear, when I noticed a door leading to the parking lot just under the stairs. Looked like a short-cut to the parking lot, so I opened it and walked out. Got in my car and drove off. I mentioned the short cut to my wife when I got home. Well, the next day when she used the same exit, she didn't have an iPod blaring in her ear. Needless to say, she was more then a little irritated when the alarm went off and employees came out of the woodwork to chase her down. Now they have a fake tree in front of the door to obscure its presence.
