S&W M&P 9MM Compact?

As sson as she turned 21 our youngest daughter (college student) took her CHL and has plastic in hand . (my wife took the class with her which was a nice surprise to me). Anyway the daughter and I visited the Arm Room and she shot several 9mm's and settled on the S&W M&P 9mm compact. I ordered one from Carter's Country which will arrive in about 10 days. I am looking for input for any idiosyncrasies, breakin issues, other?? on the weapon. I was amazed at the number of 9c models and options. She got the 9C with no interlock, no magazine safety, but with a thumb safety. She qualified with and shoots my Hi Power so I think that influenced her on the safety. Any feed back - suggestions - tips would be appreciated.

I think it's a simple to maintain pistol.

Install the palm swell that best fits her hand and let it go.

If you can find some 124 gr ammo put a box through it while breaking it in. AS long as i keep it lubed i can remember any FTF's.

I'm using hornaday self defense ammo as my carry cartridge.

Thanks. I finally found the website. I kept getting Apex Gun Parts (miltary parts). As soon as I pay off the pistol I will look into their trigger.

I love what the DCAK does to the M&P. I have one in my full size need to get one for my compact now.

+2 - I love APEX parts in my M&Ps .... be forewarned however that depending on configuration these parts can make for a very light trigger - 4 pounds or less. The DCAK I think resolves this - giving all the improvements in smoothness and crispness, but retaining the roughly 6-7 pound factory trigger pull weight. Self install is relatively easy after you've watched their helpful YouTube install videos. Just need a hammer and metal punch to drive out the frame pin and a plastic punch and/or sight pusher to remove the rear sight to access the safety block. If you're planning to replace sights, it's advantageous to do so at same time as you'll already have the rear sight off anyway.

Other than trigger and sights, not much else is needed on the M&Ps. Like Glock and XD they just run right out of the box. If she wants/needs it for any reason, someone is now making a magazine extension "sleeve" to fit a full-size magazine to the compact M&P models. Don't know the manufacturer by name, but have seen them in stores.

Anyway, she made a good choice. Glad to hear another young woman will soon be carrying - you should be proud. I'm hoping my daughter will do the same when she gets older (she's 5 now) ... otherwise I just may never let her out of my sight

If you get the flat plate mags, just call S&W and ask them to send the extension plate. They will do it on their dime, no questions asked.

+1 for the x-grip to use full size mags when desired.
I know it may be too late, and you may not be interested because of the additional cost... But if you buy the same model in 40s&w, you can get a "conversion" ($120 and up) barrel to make it a 9mm or 40 cal by swapping the barrel and using different mags. Just letting you know.

Not that you asked, but 40 S&W does not shoot the same. I would rather have a 45 than 40 if I had to choose, just for the type of recoil.

I love, love, love my M&P9c. I love it straight from the box and haven't changed anything. Either magazine feels good to me. Mine doesn't have a safety, though. I can hide it pretty darn well in my Comp-Tac at about 4.30-5.00. DH is thinking about intalling night sights, but that is the only change I would make to it. A gun belt is important if she is thinking about wearing it on-body. My compliments on her choice of a great firearm!

Thanks for the tips and information, I may post a pic when it arrives. The first modification my daughter will want is a pink paint job. Not going there but i know she'll ask. I did a pink paint job on her electronic ear protectors - now I see them in pink from the mfg. Magazine and maybe grip extention will be first changes I see coming. I guess I can hijack my own post so here goes. Re: .40 Cal SW. I carry a Kahr PM 40. I like the .40 caliber; I agree it's a "snappy" little devil to shoot but it's quite accurate. I modified the 6 shot mag with a leather wrap to match the grip more closely and put flared mag plate extentions in place of the factory ones.
