Why can't I ....

Post by Scott in Houston »

just give my guns a simple, wipe-down type cleaning???

Every time I shoot I come home and say to myself that, 'This time I'll just wipe it down and put it away (or carry it).'

I never do it! I always end up spending 3x as much time thoroughly cleaning it to almost new conditions. What is wrong with me?

Is this some form of OCD? :confused5

Can anyone else relate? I'm looking to find out whether I'm truly weird, or if this is a normal 'gun-guy' kind of problem? :fire

I can relate. If I shoot, I clean.

I can't relate.

I shot 3 of my my 4 handguns and my shotty on a trip to NM last month and I still haven't cleaned em.

By the time I do they might be dust.

But hey!...

The one I use for my daily carry I did not shoot and is clean as a whistle.

Get yourself a Glock, or 2, or 10.

Once you learn they shoot better dirty, it may help you get over your OCD. ;-)

I hear there's a similar phenomenon with SUVs. (Real SUVs, not those minivans marketed as SUVs. ;-) )

That is the gun that inspired this thread!! A Glock 19. I shot IDPA last night and came home with the thought in mind, 'I'll be shooting it again next week so I'll just wipe it down."

I ended up doing a full detail strip!!! :eek6

There is something wrong with me!

I have other Glocks (26, 32, 33) but I think I need another 19. Maybe if I had 2 G19's I'd be ok leaving one filthy and the other clean for carry?

You think you've got it bad? I do a full cleaning/oiling on my already clean guns. It's more of a therapeutic thing for me.

Sometimes cleaning the gun just doesn't do it for me. I have to dis-assemble all the magazines and make sure they are also clean inside and out, follower clean, spring wiped down with Hoppes #9 . . .

Yeah, it is a sickness.

Got you topped, 22 of them. Other than a bore snake down the barrel a few havent seen a full cleaning in years. Now the ones I carry get a little more attention than just my range ones.

I think you are normal. I do the same thing. I find it kind of relaxing. Tune the TV to a football game and just go at it.

I do the same with all my Glocks, Why? They are so easy to clean and reassemble compared to all my other semi autos. It only takes 5 minutes and I am done. My 3rd gen Smith and P95 take a little longer. My old 1911 took me forever to clean, plus it is a 1911 it should be clean. It's like having a 63 split window Vette and not keeping it garage kept, its just wrong!
