Carfax

Post by PappaGun »

Does any one know how and what threshold, if there is one, of a repair shows up on a Carfax report?

Does the insurance company report it?

Does the body shop report it?

Is it major repairs only or is there some other threshold?

I was looking at a used vehicle that I think had some work but it's not showing up on the Carfax.
While I'm no longer considering the vehicle, it made me wonder about the reports.

It depends on where the repair happened. I work in the automotive industry and I know that some shops invoicing programs will have a link to carfax so that that date/miles/vin/repair name (no customer information ever though) are automatically uploaded to the carfax site when a vehicle is taken in for repairs. So there is no "threshold" exactly it just depends on who has connections/links to Carfax. I believe that body shops and insurance companies and the DMV (or DPS or whoever controls vehicle registration in your state) all have similar connections to Carfax.

I had two seperate incidents with one of my cars, both back around 2001-2002. Neither one of the incidents shows up on the car fax report. I had the work done at a local, reputable body shop. Maybe they didn't report to Carfax back then, I'm not sure.

But to answer your question, there is a possibility that the car has been in an incident and still has a clean Carfax.
