I was Grendel, Ruiner of Meadhalls, Wrecker of Kings!

Post by OldCannon »

...and now a personal friend of SAMMI!

In case you folks haven't heard (ok, this was announced a couple weeks ago, maybe I'm the last to know), the popular-but-ostracized 6.5mm Grendel cartridge has now been accepted by SAMMI and all trademark claims by Alexander Arms has been released :clapping: (Full linky here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_121/5499 ... emark.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).

Now, I know this is mostly a pistol forum, but I'm pretty durn excited about this! This is about as close to a "one caliber" rifle round as you'll get, unless you're hunting squirrels

Here's an image comparing the 6.5 Grendel between a 7.62 and a 5.56, the two common military rounds now:

You can find a bunch of charts on velocities, wind drift, etc here: http://www.weaponeer.net/forum/forum_po ... =6567&PN=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This post is NOT meant to start a caliber comparison war. I'm sharing this because the adoption of this caliber has, in the past, been hindered by the trademark claims of Alexander Arms.

As for me, I have a nice lower with a Timney trigger that's just ACHING for a Grendel upper

Wolf Ammo is making Steel Cased 6.5 Grendel ammo at SAAMi specs.

If they start producing AKs in 6.5 I might get really excited. :cheers2:

Ballistics seem a bit shy of the venerable 6.5x55 Swede but perhaps the performance is close enough in practice. Of course, the typical weapon platforms are radically different. ;-)

The thing is.... I already have 5 rifles chambered in the one on the left under my roof, and 4 rifles chambered in the one on the right. For the cartridge on the left, that 5 would include 2 battle rifles, two heavy barreled bolt rifles, and 1 lightweight sporter bolt rifle. For the one on the right, we have one lightweight carbine, one HBAR carbine, one 24" heavy barreled varmint rifle, and one 24" bull barreled varmint rifle.

I'm trying to see a justification for a 6.5 Grendel or a 6.8 SPC, and I'm just not seeing it. At least, not in my safe.

If I had that many rifles, TAM, I wouldn't see much of a need either!

I've had this lower in my safe for almost two years now though, it wants a mate

I'm more interested in a .300 Whisper upper but less interested in the unconstitutional paperwork required for a can.

Disagree about the can. SBR,AOW and FA paperwork is unconstitutional but a can is not "arms". However I do believe cans should be unregulated as it is nothing more than a muffler.

So how many modestly "up-gunned" rounds are there for the basic (standard-sized) AR platform now? There's the 6.8 SPC, the 7.62x39, the .30 Remington AR, .300 Whisper, a host of proprietary rounds from SSK and others, and now SAAMI recognition for the 6.5 Grendel.

The way the perfomance envelopes overlap, I find this about as exciting as Ruger's introduction of their own 300 Ruger Compact Magnum, a round that is almost a ballistic twin (but not interchangeable with) Winchester and Remington's short magnums.

So what? Where does the United States Constitution give the feds ANY authority to regulate local commerce or DIY projects, arms or not? :rules:

You are preaching to the choir here. I dont understand how a muffler can be regulated either. I simply stated it was not an "arm".

I could say it's because We The People haven't been using our arms the way Jefferson and others intended, but I won't say that because someone might misinterpret the observation as a suggestion.
